I?d like to know if there are any .357 semi-automatics being sold in the DR. Because of the restrictions made on public ownership of certain calibers, and ammunition, I have decided on the .357mag. ( more than 9mm, but less than the .40, .45 military only load. Is the 125 Gr JHP the only defense load or may I find 158Gr I dare not go any higher for fear of over penetration. If I cannot find a semi-auto in .357, is 9mm +P, +P+, or cor-bon ammo available for sale in the DR?

Well you can set your heart on what ever you want, it however so seems the law will still restrict you to a 9mm or a shot gun.

.357 semi-auto? Mag or SIG?

I’d like to know if there are any .357 semi-automatics being sold in the DR. That's a weird combination, but possibly Dessert Eagles would make a semi-auto chambered for the massive .357 round. I believe the law is more about firepower than caliber. In saying that, yes a 9mm is close to a .38 in measuring diameter but stopping power a .357mag is greater than a 9mm and .40 caliber. +P+?? Jeesh, what are you hunting for?

Now if you are able to get your hands on a 10mm or .45, could you register it??

Now if you want to skirt the law, see if you can get your hands on a SigSauer P250 9mm, you can easily convert it to a .357 SIG, .40 & .45 cal.

Good luck, keep us informed.

I went to this site and found many .357 semi-autos from very reputable company names: gundirectory.com GunDirectory: Pistol and handgun reviews, classifieds and auctions, and firearms reference guide

I've checked out that link and went to the .357mag section for semi-autos and they listed the Desert Eagle, Coonan, Beretta and Glock. .357 Magnum Caliber Pistol Reviews Forum and Reference Guide at GunDirectory.com I know about the DEagle & Coonan but had suspicions about the Beretta and Glock. I double checked their websites and my suspicions were correct. The Glock32 comes in a .357SIG http://www.impactguns.com/store/glock32.html and the Beretta 8357 Cougar is also chambered for the .357SIG. Beretta International

IMHO, the .357 SIG is very close to the .40 cal in regards to stopping power. I believe that if you want Semi-Auto with a "kick" to it, then opt out for a 10mm or the DEagle chambered for the .44Mag or .50AE. Be prepared to pay mega bucks for the 10mm, .44 & .50. Many enthusiasts shoot their own reloads.

Note: the .50AE is not the massive 500S&W, you'll find in Smith & Wessons or BFR.

Yes, I am aware of the Sig not being MAG, but the general public in Dominican Republic are forbidden to own .40 or more so that is why I opt. for the .357SIG (Compact of course ). I just wanted to know if they and the ammo are available here in the Dominican Republic. Come to think of it, I'd still like to know the law on reloading your own here too!

You referenced the .357mag in your first post, so I thought you were looking for Mags only. But I believe the law states no more than a 9mm and if that's the case in regards to stopping power vs. diameter, then both the .357 SIG & Mag are out. I am also curious to know. sooner or later one of the DR gun owners will chime in. Didn't mean to get carried away.

Cheers

... with a .22 magnum will stop most threats.

Ok, so do you think the .357 SIG is here to stay, or limited like the 10mm? Do you also think the price for ammo is too high maybe for target? Would a lesser grain be prudent for target? I

IMO, the .357SIG is definitely here to stay, it fills a "niche" market for people who are unsatisfied with the power of a 9mm or just want something different. I've seen people raving about the new .327 federal mag and the re-emergence of the .41 mag. Also, gun makers like glock, dan wesson, wilson combat and a couple others still make the 10mm, even though 10mm ammo is retailing about $25 (box of 20rounds). But looking at MidwayUSA website MidwayUSA - Winchester USA Ammunition 357 Sig 125 Grain Full Metal Jacket Box of 50 the .357SIG is going for about $27 (box of 50), not that bad. I noticed a big difference between the price for JHP vs. FMJ(great target ammo).

Now reloading would be the thing to do, but the problem I believe one could encounter in the DR is finding (locally) powder and primer. And possibly getting the bullets shipped:paranoid: https://www.hornady.com/shop/?ps_se...&category_id=03f5bc0b39f584f443753498359f2f7c

If you are near a gun shop in the DR and get those questions answered it would be great if you post them here. Possibly the gun shops can make special orders for you. I would like to know if its illegal to ship gun parts like barrels and springs, etc. If its OK, maybe a gun dealer can do a special order for the SIG250 9mm which can be upconverted all the way to .45cal.

This is the number of one of the largest dealers in the DR. They can answer your questions.

Armas De Fuego
809-221-9042 227-9045 Av. Francia 101

809-227-2391 227-2392 Av.Lope de Vega 47

As for +p, yes they are legal here, but hard to find at the moment.
