Physical Therapist in Sosua Area?

Barbara broke her ankle March 15 and has been in a cast nearly the entire time plus the next 3 weeks. Contributing to length of time is failure to heal properly in first cast and need to pin the break. Therapy is anticipated once the cast is off.

Is there a competent physical therapist in the greater Sosua area, someone closer than Puerto Plata?

Using Portable Ultrasound

Perhaps I should make this a separate thread, but since it is related to my first question, I'll try it here.

As an alternative to going to a therapist, Barbara is wondering about doing her own therapy using a portable ultrasound and exercises in the swimming pool. There seem to be a number of affordable portable ultrasound units available now for home use, some, such as the ReliaMed 1000 unit on Amazon with very good user feedback.

My question is if there is anyone who has used a portable ultrasound. If so, I would like to communicate with you about your experience with it.

i had ultra sound on my knees.......its difficult to tell if it did any good because arthritus goes into remission for periods anyway, but it did seem to help.... i should imagine regular use with your own machine would be better than my twice a week treatments

Doesn't this depend on the quality of the ultrasound machine?

Is it possible to purchase one in the DR that is the same type doctors and physical therapists use?

I know you can find ones for home use on Ebay, but I'm willing to bet anything that they are crap.

I am not quite sure if ultrasound is applicable on a fractured bone. I think it would be better once the bone is healed up. Now if one doesn't know how to use an ultrasound, you can actually burn the ultrasound head thus, making the machine useless. So better know how to use an ultrasound unit properly and know the proper setting for your condition.

Hi Ringo, i don'live in DR yet but i'm in the same matters now, i've broke my ankle almost one month ago and next tuesday i'm going to remove the cast, that is necessary if there is a fracture.

Regarding the ultrasound, i did that treatment last year fot the knee, and i can tell you quite for sure that it's a kind of treatment useful for the ligament problems, not for the fracture.
My phisycal therapist told that it serves for stimulating the micro-circulation of blood in the articulation tissues.

As said before, i would definitely prefer going to a specialist and doing a good treatment (the ankle is quite delicate you know).
Hope i was useful.

Luca ;)

I went to a licenced message therapist from Canada in Cabarete 2 years ago. She was very helpful. Servi Med in Cabarete recommended her. She had an office near kite beach associated with a new condo development.

Thanks for the responses--expressions of concern, information, and for the PM, Ringo.

AZB, we were thinking about the possibility she may need ultrasound after the bone is healed and the cast is off.

Retiree, thanks for the tip. I'll check it out.

I was just wondering how Babara and you are doing? Have you found a physical therapist yet?

Hi Ken

I'm also interested to know how your wife is making out in her progress in if you have any recommendations for PT? I am rehabbing a fracture myself and will need to find someone to continue working with when I arrive next month.
Thanks,
Alana

Ken, I have PM'ed you with a name and number of the director of Clinica Union Medica in Santiago. Maybe he knows a PT that will travel.

Good luck, Ringo

My grandfather was a physio and he swore by the healing powers of ultrasound. If administered properly would greatly help the rehabilitation after a fracture has mended.
It is used to promote circulation of bloodflow and dissolve scar tissue which has built up during the mending phase in the cast.
If used incorrectly it can cause vibration in the bone tissue and excess localised heating which can be dangerous and painful.

IMHO I don't think it is something that an untrained layman should attempt.
Try and find a qualified Phsio-terrorist rather than having a go yourself.

Sorry to hear about Barbara's ankle injury

I graduated as a physiotherapist in London 2 years ago, but I haven't practice yet.

My advice is to seek professional health care advice first, as this may help to eliminate further potential problems later. Barbara will need a full assessment, preferrably, a physiotherapy assessment to decide on treatment options that best fit her requirements.

There are many factors to consider when choosing treatment care. Barbara's past medical history, currently health status, medical drugs and age will all impact on the success of the treatment plan. Ultrasound may be an option, although it is very controversial. There have been a wide range of studies on ultrasound and none of them have proven it's reliabilility. As I said, I graduated two years ago, so my knowledge is not completely up to date.

I wish Barbara all the best!
