The global conservation agency, the Nature Conservancy, posts today a notice that it is seeking an Ecotourism Specialist for its Central Caribbean Program Office in Santo Domingo.

The Ecotourism Specialist is based in Santo Domingo and serves as a resource to NGOs, public agencies (both in the DR and abroad), the private sector, collaborating community groups and tourism clusters working on the Dominican Sustainable Tourism Alliance (DSTA) project funded by USAID and collaborating partners, including The Nature Conservancy.

DSTA project priorities to be addressed by the ES include: Help project sites ensure that wildlife/biodiversity values are adequately considered when developing tourism activities. B) Help ensure that threats, such as unsustainable tourism, are minimized, while the economic, educational and outreach benefits or sustainable tourism are maximized. C) Build the capacity of key managers from the public, business and non-profit sectors to make more efficient the processes that facilitate sustainable tourism in protected areas. D) Ensure that tourism undertaken in priority project sites and their protected areas is compatible with protected area management goals and sites carrying capabilities.

The person will develop and deliver technical assistance and training in ecotoruism planning, development, management and marketing. A priority will be to help develop thresholds of sustainability for project sites, including pre-selected protected areas and areas of high biodiversity (both terrestrial and marine). The person will assist in the preparation of proposals for project support and serve as an information resource about ecotoruism in general helping to develop communications material and responding to partners inquiries. Will also assist the Central Caribbean Director and the project team in the preparation of quarterly and annual DSTA planning and budgeting, submission of periodic and annual financial and technical reports and monitoring progress over the life of the project.

Knowledge Skills:
Bachelor's degree in tourism, biological sciences or natural resources management and 4-6 years experience in community development and/or conservation education, or equivalent. Master degree preferred.
Excellent communications in English and Spanish.
Familiarity with the political and cultural environment of the DR.
Demonstrated experience in MS Office. May require database management skills with ability to produce reports. Ability to manipulate, analyze and interpret data.
