Thinking about staying at a highly recommended hotel in Santo Domingo called the Hotel Delta at No 53 Sarasota Avenue. Been to their website and every thing looks nice, but is the hotel within walking distance to the Malecon and the downtown flea markets/shopping district. Also are their any hotel reviews of this property that would be of assistance. Contemplating staying at the Duke of Wellington as an option. Will be coming to Santo Domingo in the middle of Carnival from February 21-28.

The Delta is a good hotel for the business traveler. I have used it regularly. To answer your questions, it is far from the Malecon and the downtown shopping districts. You would not want to walk these distances.

Hotel Delta? Acceptable. Location?

I have stayed @ the Delta; it's located 4 - 5 blocks from 27 Febrero, almost directly off Churchill. It's a pleasant, suburban location, near a large university, a clean, well maintained neighborhood. It reminds me of a typical USA Holiday Inn, with the premises slighly neglected & shopworn. It's clean; everything works; most of the guests are foreign business class people. Not much is w/i walking distance. Virtually none of the help speaks English if this is a problem. SUGGESTION: book at the Delta on the phone, preferably using somebody who speaks VG Spanish. The internet prices are @ 200 pesos more per night than the telephone prices?? Life in the DR! The Delta is 3 - 5 miles from the Malecon & the Zona Colonial; @ 10" & a US $3 - 4 cab ride.

I've also stayed @ the Wellington; small, pleasant, charming; located in the Gazcue section [consisting mostly of clinics, medical offices, middle & upper class apartments]; a nice, quiet area. It's 1 block from the Malecon & a 5" walk from the Zona Colonial. Many interesting restaurants, historical sites, & stores w/i easy walking distance. It's on Independencia street - a major traffic artery; trucks & buses can make it noisy @ times.

If this is your 1st visit to Santo Domingo, I'd select the Wellington; quaint, Spanish decor, distinctive, & cheaper. Much of the help @ the Wellington speak passable English. Both accept Visa & MasterCard; the Wellington adds a surcharge [5%, as I remember]. SUGGESTION: take a look @ the Casona Dorada, across the street from the Wellington; newly decorated & superior to the Wellington in some areas - in my opinoion. Good luck.

don Carlos dd, is on the mark with his remarks. The Gazcue area is quiet with many good restaurants; and both the Duc of Wellington and the Casona Dorada are small clean and reasonable. English is spoken. You are also one block from the Malecon and Casino's.I have stayed at the Duc several times and the Dorada is new from a re-modeled villa and is attractive, The shopping area and Colonial zone is a ten minute walk from either one.
