I will be traveling to the DR in a week and absolutly love water sports but I don't own any snorkeling gear. I was wondering from those who have had similar experiences would you rather purchase your gear in the DR or back home? Obiously there area bunch of variables here like cost and space it will take in your luggage but all the gear out here looks rather expensive even for starters ($50 USD and up)

I agree with 'The Virginian'. Would be better to bring from home.

You can purchase snorkling gear in Santo Domingo at places like La Sirena Mega Centro, but their stocks vary and they are not reliable. The quality is also questionable. Sizing is also an issue when it comes to flippers - the average Dominican is tiny, so sizes tend to be on the small size.

I personally would go to a diving shop before you come down. They will make sure you have equipment that suits your purposes and that fit you comfortably. There is nothing worse than ill fitting snorkling gear.
