I know this is not the DR but I have a question maybe you all can help me with. I am an American looking to work in the Caribbean and have stumbled across "The Maritime School of the West Indies".

It boasts a class certifying individuals with a "STCW'95" which will allow the individual to work on Chartered Yachts.

My questions are:

Is this a scam? They request half of the class's tuition upfront (before arrival). I understand it decreases the number of flakes but it could also be a front.

Is this certification necessary?

By working on day yachts/chartered yachts will i make enough money to subsist?

Are there any other opportunities in the Caribbean?

I'm in my young twenties, college graduate, and have professional experience working with the Navy as a civilian. The whole office job isn?t appealing to me so I?m looking for a change of pace/adventure of sorts. Any information would be very helpful.

did a quick google search on this:

STCW

looks legit, make some calls and see how much courses are. maybe you can do better off getting certified in the states and then take yourself to the islands! good luck!
