Las Canas Neighbors, Friends & Clients:

I was just informed by one of the people working on the sand truck problem that the Sindicato's (Trucker's Union) permit to take sand from Las Canas expired yesterday. There is a meeting tomorrow morning in Santo Domingo to attempt to prevent the renewal of the permit.
YOUR SUPPORT IS NEEDED NOW!

We need to show the government that the desire to stop the sand trucks is not just coming from one or two people, but from our entire community. The Sindicato has made a case to the government that nobody in Las Canas cares about this.

This has been an ongoing problem for years and now is to the point of property owners with ocean front properties losing 8 to 10mt. of property and having to build large stone sea walls to save their properties

Please respond to this email to let me know if we can put your name on the letter below, as a co-signer, to be delivered tomorrow to the department of the environment and various other government officials tomorrow.
Thanks, Bob Boyd

To Whom It May Concern:
We, the landowners and residents of Las Canas, Espaillat Province, Veragua District wish to make it known that we object to any renewal of any type of permit allowing for the removal of large amounts of sand from Las Canas. For several years, this type of activity has been occurring in Las Canas and has caused significant damage to our beaches, our road and the natural environment in our community.

While the presence of large trucks has been tolerated in Las Canas for some time, our community has changed significantly in the last two years. Private individuals have invested over US $8 million in Las Canas in the last two years and have built 12 new homes and a small hotel recently. We anticipate much more investment into the community over the next several years. Each day, often starting as early as 6am, between 50 and 70 trucks travel through the center of our community to take sand from the beach, creating noise, air pollution and a great disturbance. Our road often becomes unpassable because of the damage the trucks do to it. Worst of all, this activity has decimated what was once a magnificent natural habitat for thousands of animals, fish and birds at the end of our road.

The taking of sand from Las Canas must end. The future of our community depends upon it.
Sincerely,

[NAMES OF ALL SUPPORTERS IN LAS CANAS WILL GO HERE]

I would suggest changing the "We, the landowners and residents of Las Canas, Espaillat Province, Veragua District wish to make it known that we object to any renewal of any type of permit allowing for the removal of large amounts of sand from Las Canas. " to read We, the landowners, residents and friends of Las Canas, Espaillat Province, Veragua District wish to make it known that we object to any renewal of any type of permit allowing for the removal of large amounts of sand from Las Canas. "

Send the email to all of the real estate agencies and villa rental companies. They bring in lots of money for the government (and themselves). They should be very concerned if Las Canas is essentially destroyed through this process. It bodes ill for other smaller beach communities and will prevent these companies from being able to sell anything in Las Canas.

Follow the money...

Bob,

Just saw your post from the 4th. Is there any update on what happened in Santo Domingo with the renewal?
