Two of my friends and I (Three girls) will be traveling for the first time to the DR, at the Sosua Bay Resort in November. One of us speaks Spanish fairly well, if that helps. What should we expect in regards to the accommodations in the hotel, the weather, the friendliness of staff, and the safety in and around the resort area?

Looking at Tripadvisor.com, the hotel we booked was AI and seems to have shoddy reviews and people seem to imply that the general area is not safe, which is of great concern to us. After reading this forum, however, the opinion seems to be quite the opposite, so we would like to learn more. We will be staying for a total of 8 days, but we do not want to be stuck inside the resort area the whole time.

Are there any recommended hotspots for touring, clubbing (just for us dancing and not necessarily looking for guys), eating, or anything else?

Your experienced opinions and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time!

You will have a wonderful time at the Sosua Bay you are right on top of a stunning beach. If you go out just follow the usual precautions as you would in your own country. Lots of different restaurants and near your hotel you have a club called Rubys where you will meet lots of ex pats. Beside the Hotel there is a new club called after 1. Its about 300 pesos admission but the drinks are VERY expensive. It is called such as it opens at 1am. Take out with you only the amount of money you are going to spend and as you have someone with you that speaks Spanish that will help tremendously. Have a great time.

Sosua Bay/Victorian House is an excellent hotel. We have stayed at Victorian House numerous times and we know the management very well. The food is excellent and the staff is most attentive. If at all possible upgrade to Victorian House after you arrive. The rooms are 100% better than Sosua Bay.

As for the resort staff, you might find them extremely friendly....too friendly, in fact, but that's another thread entirely.

i just stayed at sosua bay about 2 weeks ago..here is the run down...the resort is safe and rooms are ok..definately use the safe... keep nagging the front desk if u want room service or anything in particular.. the resort is at a great location.. the after 1 club is right across the street and it is free for guests that stay at sosua bay with the wrist band.. a small casino is right next to the resort.. use the ppl who work in the resort and ask them any quesetions that u may have..they will kindly help u out..of course keep tipping them..maybe have them escort u around town for bettering your safety and they have a driver that can take u anywhere and stay with u for an extra cost but much worth it especially if u goto playa dorada or cabarete.. they should keep u from harms way.. now about 3 short blocks from the hotel are all the discos/clubs and bars that have great night scenes.. if you are all girls, u might not enjoy it as much since theres a lot of "working girls" in these establishments.. but the bars and clubs close around 2 to 230 am and thats when u see a lot of ppl heading towards after 1 club thats right across the street from the resort..u should have the most fun in there..all the places play really really good music..not just spanish music.. definately try and head out to cabarete as there are more tourists there and the bars and clubs are right on the beach which is pretty cool.. try to avoid the beach in sosua bay as u will get harashed the whole time there and end up paying for beach chairs, umbrellas, etc.. and that beach is way over crowded..try the beach by casa marina which is about a 10 min walk..much nicer and quiter beach i would say... its pretty much a straight walk from your resort to that casa marina resort..just ask the bell hop for directions.. if you using cabs to get around, try to use the same cab guy and get is number as his rates get better after u use him from the airport to the hotel... the moto-conchos(ppl on motorcycles) will be bothering u to use them to get around..try if u want..its pretty safe..dont give more than RD$100 tho. watch out for pick pocketters.. there are a few..they couldnt get me tho as i noticed, and felt them trying..lol the area isnt that bad i wouldnt suggest gettting plit up at all..dont do that!!! stay all together... i dont think i missed anything out but if i did just let me know.. as i will be there again in early Nov...

The standard rate for a motoconcho is RD20 during the day and RD30 @ night, no need to pay 5X the local rate! Make sure you have exact change. You are safer walking back to your resort from town, than riding a motoconcho after a few Cuba Libre's!

Don't forget to wear plenty of Sankie repellant and enjoy.

sosua bay is a great place. free drinks and the food is excellent and plentiful, especially breakfast !! during the day there all all sorts of activities at the resort if you feel the need to just relax and not get harassed on the beach.
there is also Mel's tours (the one i use) a short walk from the resort to take you on tours outside the resort.
you can check the tours out on the website Sos?a-News

have fun !!

Just had to say that I strongly disagree with Imsayin's opinion of Sosua Beach. Sure there are some local guys trying to sell you some cookies or prawns or whatever but they are polite and leave when you tell them you are not interested. We do not find the beach overly croweded unless you go on Sunday's when half the countries population hop on buses and head for the beaches. If you are interested in Snorkeling at all, off the Sosua beach is the place to go locally.

I agree with Bakers assessment of Sosua Beach. Compared to many beaches in the US, Sosua Beach is quiet and deserted (well, not deserted). There are vendors, and a "no, gracias" is all that is required to be left alone. The bars and the small shops along the walkway are interesting and, for the most part, appreciated. I could sit at Tom's Scandanavian Bar all day listening to his music. The water is clean and protected from heavy surf. All in all, it is a great beach, with something for everyone, and nothing for anyone who wants to be left alone.

In case anyone thought my silence was an endorsement of imsayin's post, this is to confirm I didn't actually read it. No paragraphs, what looks like text message shorthand, no capital letters at the start of a sentence - it just didn't enthuse me to read it :cheeky: so my not commenting signifies neither endorsement nor disagreement. Nor does it mean imsaying should change his/her style - to each their own.

Just wanted to put the record straight.

It's slightly over half way along the walkway, just past the pay banos. There is a wall paintlng of the four Beatles crossing Abbey Road (like the album cover) and a large Danish flag on the front of the bar. He also serves the greatest food, and he is a very nice guy who has been in the DR for many years.

Actually Tom is from Norway and he can be found @Casita #152 on Sosua Beach. Skandinavian Bar is one of only a small handful of beach restaurants I personally would eat in, try the chicken kabob and homemade mashed potatoes.
