We are first timers in Santo Domingo getting in around 12 on a Sunday in Sept. and leaving Monday. What do you recommend doing? One of us is fluent in Spanish. Deciding between the Malecon outdoor fair if it exists or walking through Zona Colonial.
Are comfortable taking publicos and buses. Is there a bus line that we could take that travels the main streets i.e if you go to NY and get on the 104 Bus you can travel all the way from Washington Heights to Chinatown. If so what is the bus called and how much does it cost? Also restaurant suggestions would be great for casual dress, reasonable prices, possibly music?
Thanks in advance.

Malecon Libre is a good option, as well as walking through the Colonial Zone (but on sundays most places are closed). You could also try the Botanical Garden. The OMSA buses travel the main streets and go from one side of town to the next and only cost 10 pesos, but there are few OMSAS circulating on weekends...you might be lucky though and find one...who knows jeje. As for the restaurant I would suggest Cinemacafe in Plaza de la Cultura, it's a great place with great music and prices are reasonably good, plus it doesn't matter how you go dressed. Another nice place is Anacleto (home-made bread) and Dorotea: they only serve Montaditos, which are spanish mini sandwiches served with fried yucca. All combinations are deliciuos and the prices are really cheap! If you go try their Sangria home-made drink!! mmmm...nice.
Again there's no dressing code for this one either.

Boca Chica or Juan Dolio

Instead of coming into SD for the afternoon, have you thought about going straight to one of the resorts in Boca Chica or Juan Dolio? You could spend the afternoon on the beach enjoying a few cocktails. ;)

Both areas are very close to the airport.

If we want to do anything on Sundays, we usually head to the beach. It is very quiet in the city on Sundays as a lot of places are closed.

We're coming in from the beach so a city will be a change. Even if everythings closed it will be fun to walk around and see the architecture(sp).

you can DO both zona colonial and Malecon Libre, both are walking distance apart on a beautiful sunday morning/afternoon you will see plenty. yes lots of places are closed on sundays but you will find your occasional shop/restaurant open. Malecon on a sunday is one of my favorite times to go visit! especially the clown shows put on for the children! :)

In the Colonial is a great, fairly inexpensive restaurant called Meson d' Bari...on Calle Hostos (about 2 blocks off El Conde), it is on almost everyone's "Top 5" list. On the Malecon, there are several open-air grill/bbq restaurants and Adrian Tropical, all on the water. If you're interested in architecture and hostory, defintely check out the CZ, but you can easily walk to the Malecon as well, I believe the "street party" is between The Intercontinental and the Jaragua...

Just start walking around the Colonial Zone. There are many places open and lots of things to see. There are little barbecue places, good restaurants and cafeterias (indoors and outdoors), Colmados where you can drink cheaply and maybe dance and talk to the locals, walk to Malecon Libre. Don't worry, there is always something to see and do in the Colonial Zone area.
