Here are some pictures I have taken while driving around Santiago doing my day to day stuff. They are mostly things you might not look at twice if you live here, but from an outsiders perspective are interesting when contrasted with life in, say for example the USA.

Followed this truck for nearly half an hour on the way to Puerto Plata from Sntiago, the guy almost fell off the couch twice. This is by far the most insistent couch potato I have ever seen. To his left (our right) is a cage full of live chickens.

Bystanders try to free a me-first concho driver form the wreckage of his vehicle after he insisted on right-of-way to merge with traffic on the "cirumvalacion" near the Free Zone in Santiago. I heard a rumor later that he did not make it. Too bad, I am sre he would have been a much safer driver after this incident. I know I am after only witnessing it.

If you are looking for Diabetes, it's this way. To the left is Hypoglicemia. I have no idea what this sign is meant to advertise. And I certainly hope I know better than to follow a sign that points the way to diabetes.

Speaking of logic, here is a guy who works harder than anyone I know to show the world that his girlriend/mother/whatever is incapacitated and unable to work. Instead of letting the poor girl rest at home he parades her around dangerous intersections under the hot sun doing more work than any legitemate job would require.

<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/uFFCzsfllqSQLOBxaRYoKQ"><img src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/michael.albitz/SNT8DQ5DABI/AAAAAAAAAIM/SSROmj0DVao/s800/100_9192.JPG" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/michael.albitz/StarredPhotos">Starred Photos</a></td></tr></table>

Hard to see in the photo, but this truck has a photocopy of a license plate taped to the back with scotch tape. I had no idea it was that easy to legitemize a vehicle. Don't know why I ever bothered with filing paperwork or paying fees.

<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/M3XX7jhK3NpFt14AxF_Lpg"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/michael.albitz/SNT8Dp8bcoI/AAAAAAAAAIU/9sxKjZBoVD0/s800/100_9193.JPG" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/michael.albitz/StarredPhotos">Starred Photos</a></td></tr></table>

I also recently learned that Crisco cans can be recycled as road signs, its a good idea to leave the label intact for, um, "branding" - and also to disclose the nutritional value of the sign.

StarredPhotos

<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/xcAkqTufEx-vMD_5o-mg-g"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/michael.albitz/SNT8DutshqI/AAAAAAAAAIc/J366LFH3nNA/s800/wasakaka.JPG" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/michael.albitz/StarredPhotos">Starred Photos</a></td></tr></table>

Not sure what "Wasakaka" is, but you can have some on your "Pollo Full" over this way if you want.

StarredPhotos

<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/fOUOePKV2XGsx_EZ4ekzbg"><img src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/michael.albitz/SNT8D5xuq-I/AAAAAAAAAIk/6PiwCA5P5AQ/s800/the_dot_con_revolution.JPG" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/michael.albitz/StarredPhotos">Starred Photos</a></td></tr></table>

For some reason I don't think this is a working URL.

StarredPhotos

<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ghWpZesLcJIBNmPzviJ2Qg"><img src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/michael.albitz/SNT8EEwu7TI/AAAAAAAAAIs/cxF-4RcOF2E/s800/Prepare_tomeet.JPG" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/michael.albitz/StarredPhotos">Starred Photos</a></td></tr></table>

I am sure this phrase was meant to be menacing but I cant figure out what a "TOMEET" is so I dont know how concerned I should be.

It's been raining a little, yeah there are puddles in the street and stuff. Sre hate it when the tires get wet, so lets park the cars and walk.

Hey I saw that "Diabetes"-sign too last week, on 27 right after Lora Autoadornos... I was grabbing for my camera but traffic would not seem to allow me to slow down... I'm glad you could take it... along with others!

Santiago

Hey...I once saw a big truck trying to go up in the mountains and all his wheels were wobbling. I mean, this truck was big and heavy. I hate to be in the car behind him.

PS-Thank you for the pictures, it's always nice to see how it is in Santiago when you are not there everyday.

For those of us who live here the photos are a reminder of what we just consider day to day life....

They are great!

We should have a list of top ten places to visit while in Santiago. I will come back again and would like to see places that a person (Like me) will stop and explore.

Great fun

Loved your pics and captions, am going to have to post a few of my own....

The Diabetes sign indicates the way to the Instituto del Diabetes, at least here in Santiago. Why they never put "Instituto de" I have never been able to fathom.
