The best place in Cabarete for bachata, merengue, and salsa is Calamar en Folie, next to Onnos.

However..I just watched that video and Ive never seen Dominicans dance bachata like that...they're usually much more sensual..most of those moves looked silly, not sensual...

Hot to trot

Well it took me 10 minutes to download it - so much for Claro codetel service (ugh!).

Fantasy - Never. If I danced with the girls in the bars here (as opposed to most of the girls in the discos), they (as opposed to I) would nearly all dance like that with me (do you think there's a message in it?). Trouble is, the wife's not to keen on me doing it (with other women). I can't work out why :)

There are several well practised steps in the video, they obviously dance together often. Most of the stuff is actually just normal except for all that head waving (would never happen on a popular, so crowded, dance floor or she's be scalped) and the leg wrapped completely around another (that's either well rehearsed or it may even be a competition step).

The lads here do the lift-the lady-off-the-floor-by-the-crotch move when they, the lady or both are tipsy or drunk. If I did it, the news would flash around Constanza (it's a small place) and my wife would beat me up.

There's a Jamaican word for the way some Jamaicans dance reggae - very very slowly and very very closely. Partners move in opposite directions. It's called grinding. I can't remember what the Dominicans call that style but they know it, have a name for it and they use it in bachata. It's not in th evideo and i smore extreme. Trust me, it's a bit like taking Viagra. (No - it's a lot like taking Viagra).

(I know - but only just - a young and reasonably attractive lady in a nearby bar, she happens to wear the tightest shortest shorts I've ever seen anywhere - so tight, the top button will not do up and the zipper can't reach the top :cheeky: She wears a short and low cut top too. In fact, there's far more flesh than clothes. I've not danced much with her but she danced bachata with me closer than in that video - in fact, I think I may be pregnant

Dominicans (female and males alike) HERE tend to believe they are born with "IT"... until they leave the country and are exposed to places where there is more competitiveness. I rarely seem to observe a pair which really can dance bachata, merengue or salsa here so one would be going "oohh aah"! Short, even Dominicans have to learn it if they want to take it beyond.

Sensual and quite explicit dancing is however not sooo seldom, yes even here, especially if you visit places where they play a lot of reggeaton... I don't like that music... but some of the girls really know how to manipulate ones cardio vascular rates there. But you want to be careful not to stare and drool, she might have a tiguere along and these places tend to attract all sorts of characters which are may not be on your x-mas guest wish list.

Bachata was a music and thus a dance style typical to cabarets and "houses" until not soooo long ago. One would assume that the working girls would have known how to use it to convince potential clients. It's still a music which struggles for acceptance in higher social groups and there are still (a few) clubs which will NOT play it.

So far I've had one dancing partner who could dance somewhat similar to the girl on the video... it felt gooooood even thou I am not that good a dancer, but without really leading me, she managed to get me enojoying the dance quite a bit.
Btw. it's usually not the prettiest ones which dance the best here... except for reggeaton.
There is a guy who sells flower arragements a nites on the Purto Plata Malecon... THIS guy can dance... actually so good, I told him to start a dancin' school instead of peddeling flowers.

JD you are so right. Many Dominicans think they are such great dancers when they are not. They do have the natural rhythm and that is all they need - or so they think. But try to tell them they need to learn something and they look at you like you are nuts.

I know the fellow you are talking about - great dancer. Now how about the guy with one leg who dances a mean salsa!!!!!

or is this a total fantasy?

Dance like that in the Dominican Republic and you might actually get laughed at. I'm not sure what that is, but it is not the Dominican version of the dance!

As I said before, the only thing that's very unusual (on its own) is the woman's gyrating head. You CAN see all the other stuff here, though never really all in one single dance. It is definitely unusual to see what really are typical Merengue turns, Bachata is usually more elegant and sensual, so less turns - it's primarily all about the hips. Most couples keep it sensual, not sexual or wild.

I said the steps looked well practised. What I was trying to say was that those two are showing off - they're doing things they've practised together a lot. Most Dominicanos dance Bachata by just doing what they fancy as the music takes them, nothing that's planned or that's been practised as set moves. Showing off is either necessary, as in a competition, or they deliberately want everyone to watch them and they know they're being watched (well I guess that's obvious as they're on camera!!!). In this macho society, such showing off (out of competition) commonly occurs, mostly led by the men (though women lead the showing off sometimes, especially in reggaton - wildly gyrating rear-ends come to mind!). I've seen all sorts of stuff (Bachata stuff) done here in the smallest of bars/discos - it's much rarer to see weird stuff in bigger places (unless they're empty) - there just isn't room.

Different people like different things. Some of my dance partners like mostly simple steps and a smooth style. Others (like my wife) prefer the weirder stuff as it makes them laugh. Others like it hot, not always for any reason other than pure fun!

Of course, drunks are another matter. There's obviously a national dance school for male drunks. all Dominicano drunks do exactly the same Bachata dance when drunk. They do things that make your videod couple look ordinary anddefy most of the natural laws of physics! :)

I agree with the other posters, you'll find most dominicans dancing a simple bachata, they'll be close that no that close with their legs inter-locking. When I dance bachata, I usually will shy away from complicated "salsa turn patterns" because many dominicanas will be thrown off their steps if I spin them around. If I know my partner, then maybe I will show off. I've noticed that many Dominicans who also dance salsa will sometime throw in turn patterns into their bachata.

So saying that, the last thing you would want to do is embarrass your partner by throwing her off and making her look simple. Remember, dancing is supposed to be enjoyed by both and also to showcase the female dancer.

Unfortunately few Dominican men understand it is about showcasing their partner. I often find the men here dance to show themselves off and often focus on themselves only. On occasion I have danced with men who hardly knew they had a partner. And I've walked off the floor - they didn't actually need a partner...

Hmmmmm let me see what I can do!!!! Or do you prefer the one where I stop dancing cross my arms over my chest and wait for him to stop showing off? Well if he actually noticed.....;)

There is a fellow who dances salsa here and I will dance with him occasionally. He thinks he is just all that and will start doing this whole showing off thing - If he forgets who he is dancing with he will start that with me and I will simply stop dancing and stand there! Then I will walk off.

The guys dancing bachata will do it too. One fellow danced an entire song with me watching his own damn feet!!!! Next time he asked I said no thanks....

NOw that I would love to see....

Here, I've not seen any woman try to lead in salsa or any other dance.

Especially in salsa the women have little if any of their own style or personality. When I have seen it, I found it quite enjoyable to watch. But most of the time the women are quite boring. That is not to say they are not good - some really are - they are just following and nothing more.

In bachata I see more women with some style and originality. I am not sure why this isn't the same in salsa.

I agree with the others, this is not attractive at all. She's just riding on his leg. Dominicans don't dance like that. In fact, they don't dance simple bachata either but it's a lot more interesting than one-two-three hop!

I am not a dance expert but I do think the bachata is one dance that Dominicans dance very well. The men do the more flamboyant moves which is nice to see if it's not overdone.
