After 9 years of SD, JD, BC, POP etc I finally made my way from SD to Santiago last week for a few days.I have to say that after spending 4 days there it's bye bye to Santo Domingo.

I just couldn't imagine the differences in culture, cleanliness, resatuarants (But I went to the same one every nite since I liked it so much) museum, views and on and on. I'm not impressed easily BUT I was really impressed by Santiago.

Will certainly return in Dec. and play their golf course and maybe try a few other restaurants.

Where did you stay John? The lack of what I would consider to be a real value in a hotel is one reason I havn't spent more time in Santiago.

He ate at maybe the #3 or #4 Italian place in Santiago and loved it. He stayed at the most expensive (or close to it) hotel in Santago, and loved it!!

If this guy had eaten at the really good spots or stayed at the collest of hotels..can you imagine????

BTW I have heard some good things about Pasticcio, but there are others and better, believe me...

Next time hook up with AZB and really see the town...

Pasticcio is good but expensive as compared to the portion you get. I think the portion is adequate for a skinny girl but not to fill up the belly of a guy like myself. Near the same spot (walking distance) there is "tomato" restaurant. prices may be the same but the food comes abundance in size and quantity, not to mention, the quality is equal or better than pasticcio.
The secret hillbilly is talking about is a very good bet in town. No wonder its kept hidden.
Gran almirante is the best hotel in santiago with a nice sized casino and 2nd floor swimming pool with a good view. Free wifi and a pool side bar, and air conditioned gym.
Johne is now hooked to santiago tunes. i am glad.

I sat at that pool one morning at 9am with a cup of coffee and my book. Could not concentrate on the book as the vista is just out of this world.

On the way back to the SD airport (not doing that again) we stopped at a caferteria (maybe one hour out of Santiago) for a great, cheap lunch. Very large with 2 bakery shops . Tons of desserts and fresh bread. But what really impressedme on the road was about another 20 minutes toward SD the purchase of fresh mozzarella in water. A pcs. the size of 3 fists about 6 bux. That pc. in NY would set you back $20.

HB,

You know the best Italian restaurant in Santiago, it is around the corner form the Gran Almirante. If anyone wants to go they will have to take you to get in though. A hint, Carlo.

Is the caferteria in the Leon museum subsitized? Reason I ask is that I had a couple of cappucinos in there after seeing the exhibits and I can swear he didn't charge more than about .75 cents each. Well made with 2 scoops of coffee grinds, Very slick place to have a cup of coffee.

Before I found Pasticcios I went on line in my hotel room and search dr1. This infor was on there but it was dated sometime in '07 so I (probably in error) passed the information by. It's OK I like where I went.

First nite I went to Pac. the waiter forgot to give us our doggie bag. The next night the minute we walked in he came over to apoligze and said sit down I have a gift for you. Came back with a salad big enough for a block party including greens, cheese, tomatoes. On the house.

I am not talking about the same place you are. This is a very private restaurant. HB knows it well.

Hillbilly's place is an excellent place to wine and dine. I have been there a few years ago and i was impressed with carlo's culinary skills. he cooks it right there in front of you. the bread is also very tasty. This is a place where a group of people go to wine and dine at a table. I didn't see a single person eating alone.

The musuem part is easy: Leon. I'm guessing its the only game in town?
I'll leave the other questions to the experts.

Traditionally, I would take her to the Pez Dorado, have one appetizer and one entr? (enough for two people!!) and then walk up the hill to Ahi Bar for smoozing, dancing and drinks...
Then follow whatever advice AZB gives you...hehe
