Crochet, the noun is ganchillo from my understanding. I think hacer ganchillo is the suitable verb. Perhaps there is a different verb in the DR though.

Is it possible that tejer doesn't necessarily refer to actual crochet, but more to knit?

the translation i get, same word for crochet and kniting = tejer, the difference is in the stitching. :) or the type of needle.

tejer con aguja de ganchillo = crochet.
tejer = knit
