We want to spend a week or so around Barahona. Hotel will meet and transfer us from Santo Domingo but flights from UK go to Puerto Plata or Punta Cana. How best to get there? Don't really want to hire a car. Would a taxi be out of the question and if so should we stop somewhere on way - Jarabacoa looks good? Does anyone have an idea of cost of long taxi rides? We are really happy to explore but don't want to spend our entire holiday on the road. Please help!

Taxi from Puerto Plata airport to the Caribe Tours or Metro bus station in Puerto Plata, where you can get a comfy and cheap (under $10 USD) 4 hour ride to Santo Domingo. Arrange for your hotel to pick you up at the bus station there. It will be another 2 1/2 hour ride from there to Barahona. This journey is best started early, so if your flight arrives after noon, you may want to arrange for a nights lodging in PP and leave the next morning. Much the same if you flew into PUJ, with the bus company being Bavaro Express instead of Caribe or Metro.

it would seem a taxi would be out of the question , or very costly...

I would wait to hear what other say about catching a bus from Santo Domingo to Barahona.

Although I loved that trip.

There is a section of road very close to the shore line, that has a solid wall of vegataion growing within an INCH of the travel lane going west. it is at least 8-10 feet tall.....it is eerie driving down that stretch...you just figure a hand or a horses head or a goat is going to pop out of that wall of green and wack you hit it ha ha ha

anyone remember this section? and where it is?

There are Gua Guas leaving all the time from SD to Barahona. I am not sure where they leave from though. But there are a lot of them, and very inexpensive.

These Gua Guas leave from Santo Domingo to Barahona near or around Parke Enriquillo. But, you have to be one of the first ones in, and dont sit way in the back unless you wanna be squished. They pack them up [retty well. Consider taking the Caribe Tours bus from Santo Domingo to Barahona is a very comfortable ride. Might run you about 300 to 350 pesos. Buy snacks and bottled water to keep you well hydrated. I hope you are staying in a good place in Barahona. Not all of Barahona is nice, and private beaches dont mean that the waters are not rough and deep.

Thanks for all your help. Journey Santo Domingo to Barahona is no problem as our tour op can pick us up in SD. Still need to decide whether to fly to PUJ or POP. Whichever we will stay there couple of nights then travel to SD by publuc transport. Looking for small friendly hotel on a beach but don't need large resort with casinos, golf courses etc. Suggestions please? Also what will weather be like in March? I keep reading different reports for that time of year both north and south - and central too?
