We are planning a holiday in SW, Barahona area but can't work out which airport to fly to from UK. Whether PUJ or POP we will stay there couple of nights then travel to Barahona by public transport. Looking for small friendly hotel on a beach but don't need large resort will casinos, golf courses etc. Suggestions please? Looks like PUJ might be more convenient for our onward jouney but can only find huge resort hotels there. Also what will weather be like in March? I keep reading different reports for that time of year both north and south - and central too?

take the las americas airport in santo domingo,
much closer to Barahona and in the southern area you have the better chances to find you accomodation.
PC to Barahona would be a very looong day on the road.

If you are coming from the UK by charter your only options are POP or Punta Cana - there are no UK charters to Santo Domingo.

Of the two I would recommend POP because you can get a Caribe Tour bus from Sousa (nearest town to airport and best place to stay when you arrive - try Rockies Bar at abou $US25 a night) to Santo Domingo and then bus with same company to Barahona. They are a reliable company - similar more or less to National Express in the UK and take luggage + don't make many stops on route. Sosua to Sd will take about 4 hours and SD to Barahona about 2.5 hours - long journey but you will see a lot of the country. You could also consider a night or 2 in the Zona Colonial of Santo Domingo to break the journey up.

To get to Santo Domingo you would need to consider American Airlines or Iberia which will be more expensive.
