I'm shopping around for a new Trace 3.6 kw inverter.

Checking the local papers and calling around SD, I'm getting prices around US$1,326.00 including ITBIS for a new, in the box Trace 3.6 kw unit.

Then I get an Ebay coupon this a.m. for up to $100 off any single item purchase accepting Paypal.

I start checking Ebay for inverters and found that I can have a new 3.6 kw unit delivered to my door for US$938.41.

Ley 9-96 lets returning Dominicans bring in up to US$2,500.00 in goodies duty free (1 item each of electrical appliances) between 11/28 and 1/7/2009, so the inverter becomes duty free.

Throw it in a suit case and get on a plane.

Net savings of about US$400.00 if nothing happens to it during the warranty period.

Any better deals out there?

Good ?s.

The unit looks to be between 45-50 lbs.

Xantrex DR3624 Inverter

The airline baggage limit is 50 lbs., after that the fee is $50 overweight + the normal $15 (online purchase) first bag fee.

I'm not sure about the timeline requirements for being out of the country, I'll have to look that up.

You could go to USA December 11 and come back in December 20 and still you would be able to get your new products across Aduanas without a problem. At least I haven?t had a problem that way.

Is that the same exact one you'd get in The DR though? Does the price quoted in The DR include installation?

I don't think you'd have any issue with getting it through customs without paying a bunch of duties...They pretty much exempt everybody for that period...and if I were you I wouldn't even declare anything just take it through in my carry on luggage.

Full Sine Wave Inverters

Is it a D.R. series ??

The DR series is not full sine wave.

I would get the TRACE / Xantrex Prosine series. It has Full Sine Wave which I think is better for motors, high end electronics, plasma tvs etc.

People I know in the DR seem to have bad luck with tv's, answering machines etc. I think their non sine wave inverters are causing slow damage to their electrical appliances.

It cost more up front, but as we depend more and more on routers, internet, cameras, lcd / plasma tv's, well pumps, etc it might be worth it.

They are made in the USA, so I would think the ones sold in the DR are also from the US. No install included.

Great idea. Looks like ~47 lbs. out the box. I wonder if the overhead compartment will hold that, lol.

The true sine wave producing Prosine is definitely a better unit as it mimics grid power alternating current versus the DR series modified sine wave form.

The only obstacle I see is the price. A 3kw Prosine is running around US$1200 more than a 3.6kw square wave DR series.
