A number of rivers have burst their banks as a result of several days of persistent rain. Photos courtesy of Aronis Polanco of Montellano.net & Sacandomelao blog - slideshow here:

Inundaciones en Montellano 22/11/2008

Rivers affected are: El Limonal, Mu?oz and Cam?, the part of the Mu?oz near Playa Dorada caused traffic holdups early this morning. The El Limonal near Montellano came to within 100 metres of the main PP-Sosua highway near Montellano also causing traffic jams. In downtown Puerto Plata the San Marcos river also burst its banks and flooded the Aguas Negras, El Javillar, Las Tres Palmas, Mono Mojao, Villa Progreso, Los Limones, Las Tres Palmas, Villa Miseria, Playa Oeste and Los Rieles barrios.

So far no fatalities other than livestock & Christmas turkeys and chickens which drowned. A lot of folks were evacuated in the early hours of this morning.

Drove to Sosua this morning about 11am and the main road was flooded for about 200 yards just past Monte IIano. When I returned to Puerto Plata at about 1pm the flooding had receded to less than 10 yards.

The lucky thing is being so close to the ocean the run off is fast and by tomorrow if the weather clears as foretasted all will be back to normal.

The term "SNAFU" applies here all the time.:tired:

Thank you catcher & Rattus, I'll pass your appreciation on to the photographer, Aronis.

Unfortunately there is one fatality - a 12 year old in Los Rieles barrio, Puerto Plata. His mum sent him for coffee but instead of going straight to the colmado he went to look at where the river San Marcos had flooded & regrettably got hit & trapped by a falling abandoned home. The home had been abandoned because it was damaged the last time the San Marcos flooded.........
