Is everyone who visits DR Cheap???

I always see posts more and more on DR1 for getting a cheap hotel, cheap cab ride, cheap dinners, cheap flights, cheap girls etc....... I rarely see anyone post that they are looking for a nice hotel,dinner,taxi,etc......
In my opinion if you can't afford to go on vacation and enjoy yourselves stay home and watch the travel channel you bunch of Cheap skates. Does anyone agree?

One thing I've found in the DR is that there are plenty of nice places; restaurants, hotels, whatever but not all are priced according to their worth. Why not make use of a resource like DR1 to find the better places that may be superior but less expensive and are therefore better value?

Does that mean I'm cheap? :cheeky::bunny::bunny:

There are many rooms in the house of the lord.

Cheap, moderately priced, and expensive. Everyone has their own budget and needs for vacation. The DR is, and should be, a place where anyone can feel comfortable and welcome.

If you pay less more than likely you will get less, but that is up to each individual vacationer. The weather and public beaches are the same for everyone.

The DR is known as a relatively "cheap" place to vacation. I doubt you'd see similar questions on a message board for St. Barts, Monaco, Cannes, etc.

And for the record, I have seem many posts asking for "the best" or "the most luxurious" hotel, restaurant, etc...in Santiago, SD, Bavaro, Samana, The Northcoast...

it is an art to get great value for a reasonable price
but I guess one man's "cheap" is another man's "find"

I think dominican republic is one of desination for cheap skatees

when more american come, the cheap price will go away like the north coast right now. The nice hotel and dinner here is not cheaper than US. i think folks looking for luxous dinner and hotel should stay in Florida, do not forget you cannot enjoy 500 channel TV in English here, The tap water fill with virus.

It doesn't hurt to look for a bargain especially in these economic times!

I don't find the DR that cheap anymore, twenty years ado it was cheap. The food prices are comparable to the US and so are the proces at some, not Domican, restaurants. Granted you can get a playe of the day, which I love, for @$120RD, however other restaurants can be alot more. Real Estate prices are much cheaper, electronic prices can be higher.
I don't feel that people looking for a cheaper vacation should be maaligned. They need a vacation also and no one has the right to be crtical of another individual

In my opinion people/families with tight budgets have the rights to have a nice vacation too.

Why should they stay at home watching the Travel Channel when they can go to the DR to enjoy the beach for much less then those that go to Bermuda?

Sometimes choosing to go cheap is the only alternative if they want to do something - especially in today's economy.

On the other hand, even if I had a lot of money I would still look for the values, maybe it was because we didn't have a lot growing up and it has been ingrained in my head.

, I dont think I am always looking for cheapy-cheapy ,but for the best value and reasonable prices. I think its good to ask questions about prices before your trip so you have in mind what is a reasonable price for services, taxis, food, restraunts etc. This was a topic of conversation on my last trip ,Some places I found way overpriced for what was recieved and then there were some great places ,with very good prices, It is good to have conversation and share experiences of great services ,great prices ,and affordable places we have visited. There are places I would highly reccomend ,and places i definatly would not ,both based on price and quality. I always like to get a deal so i can splurge on something special.

I'm not cheap but my wife is extremly frugal. She is the only woman I've known that hates to spend money, even on clothing. I love to eat in good restaurants, especially on vacation, but it takes a lot of arm twisting to get her to go. She could eat rice/beans every meal, however she never turns down free food. Most guys/girls that marry Dominicans seem to think that Dominicans like to spend money, no nothing about budgetting...etc but my observations and reality is the opposite of this. If I would have met Yris 30 years ago I would probably be rich. Have got off the topic, back I come. The difference to many between a 3 star and a 5 star are worth paying the difference, for me only if the food is a 5 star. As long as the room is clean and secure- its good enough. Food and service a way more important.

I frankly think that it is ridiculous to pay more than a reasonable price for accommodations, whether in the DR, NYC, Paris, or Rome. And I think it insulting that vendors and merchants would charge more than a reasonable price. Now, if that's being cheap, I proudly stand accused.

People going to DR to vacation on the 'cheap' are about 3 years late. i know in Sosua, you go out to Sosua Life or 59, Corona is about $5 USD, Presidente about $3, the whores, if you're new and don't know will run you $50 for a short hit, decent hotel room is $50, meal at a decent restaurant about $15-$20 a person. i wonder if those mongers have heard of Brazil, Colombia, Thailand, and even Mexico.

Everyone?

Come on Badpiece, you can't possibly think that the active members of DR1.com represent any significant proportion of any population, much less the number of tourists that visit the DR.

99% (and this is an understatement) of tourists to the DR don't even KNOW about DR1.

So no, everyone visiting the DR are not cheap.

However, most people motivated to ask for "help" on DR1 do tend to be of the cheap kind, or at least it appears that way.

People that have top dollar talk to travel specialists and they know the "it" places on the island. They, more often than not, get referred by people they know that visited a top notch top dollar hotel and, more often than not, they will be referred to that particular resort. No need for DR1.

You will never, perhaps never is too strong, rarely see a post about a soon to be tourist asking about accomodations as the Westin Roco Ki or Altabella Resort in Cap Cana or Tortuga Bay in Puntacana Resort & Club, or even Casa Colonial in Puerto Plata.

And when the Four Seasons opens in Casa de Campo or the Ritz Carlton in Cap Cana, you definitely will not see those names being totted around in questions posted on this forum.

DR1 members don't even add up to 1% of the population of any place (postage stamp islands don't count), so don't go off assuming things based on the participation rates of certain type of people here.

"Does anyone agree?" ------ Not this poster. Everyone has the right to spend their money as they see fit. Why should they be begrudged and labeled ?Cheap skates? for making economic decisions that best suit their needs and desires?

According to Webster?s a cheap skate is: ?a miserly or stingy person; especially: one who tries to avoid paying a fair share of costs or expenses?

Why would one be called a cheap skate if they are able to pay a cheap (but as a fair published or offered) price for a service or commodity? Why should one pay more?

People who spend wisely are looking for good value to go on vacation and enjoy themselves and obtain nice cheap hotels, nice cheap dinners, and nice cheap taxis by not paying list prices and they can find it in the DR.

Regards,
PJT

Does anyone have any information on Altabella resort or Tortuga Bay? Or even Casa Colonial if that's all I can get.
My 3 kids and I are looking for a place to go and spend ALOT of money in a country where the majority of the population lives off of less than $2US/day.
