Anymore..anyway..

ok Ill open up...because i want to show I am NOT mr negative...

I have previously traveled to and through Danto Domingo a total of 4 times.

twice as a passenger on hunting trips that took us through there and on return , plus a little R and R. ahem....

and twice with my ex GF ( once with her mother!)

and man it was a rat race each time...even the two times( actually four going and coming) when i wasnt driving..and a bigger nightmare when i was driving.

No signs to help you along the way... road splits...50-50 chance no sign to tell you. Stop and ask a police officer. he has no clue...he always seems to come from the other direction and doesnt know where I want to go.

Traffic from hell...and dominicans to boot...4 lanes but 8 guys want to all be first so it becomes defacto 8 lanes...and they will all try to crush their way into the intersection.

road construction...huge holes...one sign for detour right at the hole...otherwise...figure it out yourself..

Crime and lots of it...almost all the bad things that i have heard and my friends have experienced, happend in Santo Domingo...SERIOUS crimes . at least three friends seperatly were involved in shootings..NOT GOOD

so it was this last trip , I had planned to spend a few days in that city and was apprehensive to say the least. I was sure my car would get stolen... and I might even get robbed...

but for sure i would get lost..

plus i was meeting a person for the first time face to face.

BUT as it worked out, i found that the streets were well marked with many many new signs...at all the intersections i could see all the info i needed. the roads were clear, traffic was normal, even at busy times. Even cleaner the streets were.

didnt see any crime...and even traveled out of the city down to Playa Palenque...( the destination is not worth the trip folks) but the trip was nice....I always love going out of the way places.

I went out to at least 5 or 6 different clubs...and even for a tuesday night one club ahd a lot going on...skits and competitions for doing dumb stuff. made for a lot of fun...

even went to the casino for 2 hours to kill some time and won!!!!

I still hate the fact you cant look at a map and make plans for going someplace in the city...because so many roads are ONE WAYS..it trows you plan into the garbage

any way...I am not affraid of SD anymore.

Funny how the things you dread about the capital is exactly why I love it.

Anyhow, glad to hear your view of Santo Domingo is changing-I prefer the chaos of the capital as opposed to the campo but then again, I'm from NYC.

Bob, stop stealing my experiences and stories. I too survived the big bad Capital and lived to tell. Although I still much prefer Santiago.

I'm so glad to hear that you had such a positive experience! It really isn't all that bad here in the Capital. :bunny:

If you find the streets confusing, grab a copy of the Santo Domingo street directory (Guia Santo Domingo published by MAPAS GAAR, S.A.). Not only can you look up street names (!) it also shows one way streets!

I picked a copy up at the airport recently. I have also seen it at Plaza Lama for around RD$500. I would think that you could pick a copy up from any major fuel station. :cheeky:

Playa Palenque is more of a family tradition for our family because my great grandmother was from there. All of my grandfather's side of the family still lives there and we always try to make some time to visit Palenque to visit relatives, my great grandmother's grave and of course, the beach. All of the businesses on the main road that have the name Aquino are owned by my family. We have a lot of us there in that small town.

they walk down from the closest town to the beach...

they will give you a rock or a piece of a sea shell as compensation for what ever you give them ha ha

Two Old Sisters

I see the two sisters every time I'm out there. I believe they live in one of those small houses on the road between Playa Palenque and the other (nicer) beach at Cocolandia. They are always pleasant and always silent. Once I give them a few pesos they do not bother me again that day. If I see them on the street they always nod and smile a greeting to me. The Dominans with me that are familiar with them always are sure to give them a few pesos. I actualy look forward to seeing them each time I visit.

until the recent AMET crackdown on seat-belts and red lights i used to love driving in DR. forget about the rules, right-of-way, stop signs, one-way streets, seat-belts, red lights... just make sure nobody hits you and you don't hit anybody. i (used to) love it.

Bob, there are two words that explain the difference:

Roberto Salcedo

The best mayor the city has had in a long time.

He should run for president. If he does with the country what he has done for the capital so far, he would be a really good president.
