A US traveler unfortunately had her car broken into and passport, luggage and handbag stolen. It is Friday. The emergency number of the US Embassy says to call from Monday to Thursday.

This person was to booked to leave on Sunday, and now has no cash, no credit cards.

Is there any way that the person could get a passport this weekend to leave on Sunday.

What is the procedure for a person who has had passport stolen.

The problem is that now the person has no photo ID to start the process.

Any guidance from someone in the know or who has been through this procedure?

Much appreciated.

Whereas I agree that tflea might be able to offer some words of wisdom & advice, it is my belief that the US Consulate/Embassy should give out an 'emergency' number.

If that fails then I would seriously suggest the person concerned RINGS their Congressman/woman or Senator to have them confirm their status to the authorities down here. Generally a NEW passport will take a while to complete BUT, the Consulate (if you can locate someone' will be able to supply an emergency Passport so that the person up $#!T Street can get onto the flight on Sunday! ~ Good Luck! ~ Grahame.

Thank you. Was able to find out that the person can show up at the US Consulate on Monday without a passport appointment. Just walk in. To get the passport issued over the weekend, a life/death reason would have to be presented, and getting back to work on Monday is not valid, was told.

What the US Consulate will do is issue a document that will be valid for the person to get back to Puerto Rico -- where she will have then to apply for the passport. The document will be issued the same day.

Was told no documentation is necessary. They can look the person up and find them in the system. So no problem about not having a photo ID.

Needs two photos. Bring in the police report. The person would have had to have had a passport. This will not work if the person did not previously have a passport. Also cash is required -- not sure how much.

They open at 8am, so should go early to be one of the first in line.

There are emergency phone numbers on websites for US Embassies Worldwide. Look around. Lost passports are not usually considered an 'emergency' unless special circumstances are evident.
