We will be returning to Breezes POP for our second visit in February and I have been reading terrible things about the resort; has anyone been there lately? Has it really gone down hill that much? I am a bit concerned we (12) made the wrong choice! We enjoyed the resort so much on our first visit (2003).

I'm not a fan of TA; I guess we will take our chances and hope for the best. I thought someone in the area may have the "inside" scoop.

Gambling

Have been told of progressive gambling games being routine at the casino at this property and if that is the case -- be extremely careful with playing (ie: run) -- especially the ones where you start playing "for free".

I have been to this hotel many times in the past few years and there have been many changes. Some of the rooms have been upgraded which is a good thing. I don't mind this place, but it sure isn't a 5 star resort. You will have a good time still.

It's fine

I have stayed more times than I can count at 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 star AIs all around Playa Dorada Sosua Caberette and Breezes is on the higher end.
I'm not sure how you judge but the pluses for me are the fact that they have a couple theme rest Mexican, Italian,Japanese,(all require reservations but that's the way it is). I like the fact that there is transportation to both Caberette and Sousa a couple times a day. They have a beach area on site (unlike say Fun Royale / Fun Tropicale Beach Resort where the shuttle goes to the beach). Breezes has supervised activities such as a trapeze, the pool has a "river" that allows almost everyone to be seated "waterfront" there 9 hole pitch and putt golf course, it's not Robert Trent Jones but there are no additional charges if you feel like playing. Are some of the rooms in need of a bit of a face lift? Probably. Is this a 5 star resort? No it is not. Will you enjoy being there? Only you can say (an I hope to hear a report after you return).
I'm not sure if it is me or my attitude but I have never had a complaint while visiting any of these lower budget hotels that ruined my stay ( I won't let it I guess) I have had to go to the pool with a wastebasket to get water to flush, I have had no A/C, A/C dripping water. I have had no electric (candles were nice). I've been overwhelmed by time share sales people (some have reported this as a problem at Breezes). I have seen the most intense rain of my life for 5 days straight. You get it. I love DR and have since the plane landed the first time in Santo Domingo in March 1986. I stopped counting at 30 something times.
Anyway go and enjoy yourself it is the Dominican Republic, embrace it for all it has to offer and you will hardly remember the reviews you read.
Gerry
PS I will be in DR Feb 13 - Mar 2 2009 and a few of my friends will be at Breezes as they own time there. I may visit for a day or two.

My last stay was at breezes. +100 to everything ggparts said.

After reading a ton of reviews -mostly bad- and seriously regretting my reservations I was more than pleasantly suprised when I arrived.

Yes I could see what the reviewers were griping about but it wasn't enough to 'ruin' my trip.

As you already know it has the 'Best Pool EVAR' :cheeky: JK, it is pretty schweet though. And speaking of the progressive game in the Casino I won 600$usd. my first night and never gave back a nickel :p

alternative accommodations?

I was contacted by someone that had reservations there for May a few weeks ago, and he was told that his reservation wouldn't be honored, so he was in the process of looking for other accommodations and wanted some recommendations in the area. I told him that it shouldn't be hard to find alternative accommodations and gave him a few suggestions. However reading that article if I read it correctly they indicated they would help you in finding alternative lodgings, my friend didn't indicate that, and I wonder if he knows that they have indicated this, maybe I should tell him to contact them for their assistance (that is if he hasn't already found suitable other accommodations).

Although we didn't stay at Breezes, we were at the casino one night last week and were VERY disappointed. I usually don't complain, but it was very run down in my opinion. On the plus side, the staff was friendly.

The casino was empty (we were the only ones in there for over 2 hours) the night we were there. As soon as we got there I used the ladies room which prompty over flowed and flooded the bathroom. I told two different staff members (in spanish so it wasn't a language problem) but neither even reacted at all. We also noticed that more than half of the slot machines had tape on them indicating that they were out of order. The tables were fine, we won a little bit and then left. IMHO there are many other better casinos in the area to choose from and we wouldn't go back to Breezes

My read is that it is only the company SuperClubs Breezes which is pulling out. The establishment will remain but will revert to being Sol de Plata once again, just like it was initially. I remember visiting friends who stayed there years ago when it was Sol de Plata - seemed ok then to me.

When you click on the site:
Breezes Puerto Plata
you get a page not found on the left plus the original page on the right. Seems a strange way to make an announcement but........who knows?

Lambada is correct. It is closing for the summer. Breezes is pulling out and the plans are after renovations over the summer it will reopen in November (i think that is what i was told) as Sol de Plata Hotel and spa.

Here is the email from my friend that works at Superclubs here in Toronto.

SuperClubs had a management contract with Puerto Plata which expires at the end of this month at which time the owners of the resort will undertake the management themselves under the name of Sol de Plata Beach Resort & Spa;

Effective May 1, Breezes Puerto Plata will close for the summer and guests will be accommodated at another Puerto Plata property.

Cheers
