Are pre paid cards available in the major grocery stores? I would like to leave some for friends as a small thank you. Any info will help.

Yes, generally in the major supermarkets they are available as "bonos" de compra, you can buy them for different amounts (fixed: $300, 500, 1000, etc).
Where are you located, though?
I will be visiting for three weeks and staying with friends in different cities. I will purchase the cards when I arrive, now that I know they are available. Thank you Estrella for your info. I live in Canada but I wasn't sure that the option was available in DR.
