Hiya.

Is there any good clinics in Punta Cana? Which insurance company do most of them accept? I've read a lot about Universal. is it the best one? Is there any offices in the area where you can go and arrange it? How much is it? 125$/month?
I'm moving there soon. Should I arrange any insurance from UK for first couple of months or should I wait till I arrive and should I get it there? I just don't know how long it takes and how easy it is to get it.:ermm:

I'm really confused with all these preparations, will be happy for any advice.

we should at least start to answer on one of the 2 double posted threads.
i use Humano ARS, til now accepted at all clinics in the PC area, use the same for my wife and my boy, around $70.-US per piece per month, it is the so called Platinum Plan, the have also plans with lower rates.
to move over here i would highly recommend to get a insurance at home first before you board that plane, just for some months, so you have the time to complete the process to get one over here.

You BETTER have insurance or Centro Medico Punta Cana will absolutely rob you blind!!!!!

They charge people different prices depending on what they think they can get our of you like a motoconcho would.

My oldest daughter had diarrhea, wasn't eating and then woke up in the middle of the night vomiting so we took her there while on vacation in PC. They insisted we must leave the girl overnight so the doctor could see her first thing in the morning and told us it would be dangerous for us to just come back the next morning. When I asked what a private room costs, they said they didn't know? They told me they needed to ask some lady who handles that stuff full time. I found her before they did and asked her myself and she said she didn't know. I asked her point blank if she was in charge billing for rooms and she confirmed she was and had been for some time. I asked her why she didn't know the price then? She said she didn't know, why she didn't know and was going to call someone else and ask them (at 3:00am?) to confirm. At that point I told her changing the prices on me because I'm a foreigner like I was buying a souvenir on the beach didn't inspire much confidence in their dogcrap clinic but she had me by the 'you know what's' so I had to grin and bear it.

My wife stayed with my daughter and when she was released the next morning she'd received one IV and a few lab tests. They charged my wife RD$25,000 ($715 US) for those services.

It's their clinic and they're free to rob, steal and pad the bill all they want. I'm free to tell people about them doing so.

I was "treated" in CMPC last year. I was vacationing in PUJ and few days before that I hit my knee on the edge of the desk in my office. Few days later a weird round stuff appeared under the skin on my knee. I went to CMPC, was attended by the emergency, sent over to a specialist and taken the X-Rays. With my Humano insurance (Max individual plan) I paid about 120 pesos (less than US$ 4) for everything.

i've been in pain with my right shoulder last summer for some days,
went there, got a check, got a x-ray, been all included in my medic plan, even to get the injection which took off the pain from the inflamation of that lil liquid which is located there. the only thing i paid been the needle and the fluid i got injected which i bought myself at a nearby pharmacy. wifey been there several times with our boy for the usual kiddies stuff and never paid anything else than some meds which we usually purchase at our local 'hood pharmacy with the free prescription from CMPC.

sorta related. I got REALLY sick on my last trip. (intestinal infection from some bad Lambi). The doctor made two house calls gave me two injections and about 6 different bottle of pills. I had no insurance and the whole bill doctor and meds came to about 80 USD. My dominican friend thought that was too much..but i probably would have paid double that here in the US WITH insurance. ANd the best part is that i was cleared up in little over a day.

Ok..it wasnt a life threatening situation (but try telling me that at the time)...but i was really impressed.

never travel without the proper travel med insurance and always have a valued credit card or a good amount of cash at hands while on vaca, even with a travel med in most ocassions tyhe bills need to be prepaid and get refunded by your insurance when back home.
for everybody living here as a resident i can only recommend to not spend a day without a med insurance, too much can happen.
and hey, the best med insurance is the one which you pay your whole looong life long without ever using it.

Agreed, must have Med Insurance in the DR. Our insurance is from another Latin American country and did not cover us at CMPC. Insurance is cheap in the DR and we intended to purchase it but they'd only be in the country a few days and we went to the beach first. Murphy's Law, oh well.

We don't get ripped off often, but PCMC got us good. My wife is Dominican and she's a fighter but after being up all night with a sick kid and not being on her home field she just paid PCMC's ransom demands and chalked it up as a learning experience.
