Hello everybody.

I want to buy old Ford Bronco (full size), or Chevrolet Blazer K5, or Dodge Ramcharger. I can pay reasonable price for one of them if it's in good condition, but it looks like nobody sells it.

Any suggestions? Any vintage car lover's club here?

I look at that site at least twice a week for a long time, and I have never seen them there.

Those trucks are very rare here. For last three years here I have seen about 5 K5s in the streets, 2 or 3 Broncos, and I think I have never seen even one Ramcharger.

Yeah, I just checked now as well. Very few older trucks. Maybe next time you see one you should stop him and make him an offer. I always liked the big Blazers... but I'd like to have a '95-'99 Land Cruiser. There are still a few of them around for sale.

I like those models because all of them have very short wheelbase for full?size truck. If it's built in 1990 or older, there are no electronics inside the dash, motor and transmission (it's simple 3-speed automatic). It's very easy to repair, and aftermarket parts are pretty cheap if I order them from rockauto.com (I do the same for my '97 Dodge Ram). I also have one mechanic guy who has 9 years experience with this kind of trucks, so I can buy and enjoy the ride, the only problem is that I don't know where to buy. And I can't order it from ebay because of stupid restrictions to import something older than 5 years.

Most of the trucks you are looking for have been beaten in to the ground by now. There just aren't many around and I'm not sure you would want the ones that are. You can get a 10 year old Toyota or Mitisbshi Suv. that is good shape and there are parts available. That's what we did. No problem for 3 years and easy to get parts if I have a problem.

Contact customs here. You CAN import a vehicle that is more than 5 years old. The catch? You'll pay taxes on the vehicle based on what it would pay if it were only 5 years old.

I was told many times that it's impossible, but I will ask my lawyer again about that. For example, if '86 Ramcharger costs $4500 on ebay, how much in Customs fees would I be charged for it?

I know old Toyotas are great, but I like old american trucks only, so I want to buy one of those "serial killer truck" from 80's movies ))).

I have '97 Dodge Ram now, great truck, but the parking is like a pain in the ass, especially in Santo Domingo city center. I want something shorter, but still full size.

There is a way to import older vehicles as "classic cars" I believe it is part of a government incentive to make the island more attractive to tourists.

Pretty sure HB has more info, also there is a thread from last year on the subject.

Thanks... but I want to check the info about customs fees first... because if I really can buy it from US, I prefer Dodge Ramcharger.

Guys,

I am interested only in following:

Chevrolet Blazer K5 1976-1991,

or

Dodge Ramcharger 1974 - 1993

or

Ford Bronco 1980 - 1986 (I don't like 1987 facelift)

Only 4WD, only automatic, only gasoline (not diesel, not propane gas converted), not lifted.

Doesn't matter one bit what you paid for it. They will value it on THEIR terms (translation: a helluva lot more than you paid). Additionally, the duty has a 40% penalty...on the cost AFTER the 17% initial registration and 16% ITBIS.

That's too much.

So, the only way is to buy something 1979 or older, and import it as classic car for flat rate 3500?

Maybe it's more easy to find it here and spend some money to bring it back to good condition.

Bringing a proven and trusted high quality used car from US and not buying an abused rebuilt one in DR is an excelent decision and you will be happy.

Just make sure to double check with customs several times. LOTS of crooks here who live from defrauding and ripping-off people.

Be extremelly carefull here. Extremelly!

Pretty much. And I think you'll find the DR Classic gurus will have a differing opinion as to what constitutes a "classic". I'm sceptical they'll think a bigass 80's Amurikin $WD shorty truck is it. JMO.

And FWIW, even if you get the cklassic clubs $3500 flat duty rate, you'll STILL be paying the 33% on the amount Aduanas ~thinks~ your iron is worth.

And keep in mind that the oldsters you find here tofix up" also piad the large taxes, so you'll STILL be paying more than you think you should. And the cost of parts you'll have to import to "fix up" will come at a premium after shipping.

It ain't the US with an auto salvage yard and specialised parts store on every corner.

Hillybilly, Cobraboy, have you guys gotten any further with the cars you wanted to import?
Can't speak for Luis, but I opted NOT to bring in my '70 Bonneville, '70 BSA Lightning, '02 VTX 1800C (not a "classic"), or my '71 TR6 (car).

By the time they were all here, the cost would have been huge, the roads would destroy them, parts non-existent...

Better they go to someone in a position to care for them the way they should be. That place is not the DR.

But I have 12 '08 Suzuki V-Strom 650's, so my "toy" jones is satisfied...:classic:

I don't like '89 facelift, but maybe it's a good idea to buy it if it's in good condition. Can you ask your friend if he still wants to sell it? If yes, I can call him.

Bump...

I am still looking for it. I found one Bronco and one K5, but they were in piece-of-garbage condition (although sellers declared it as "exellentes condiciones"). I also found one lucky Bronco owner, but he doesn't want to sell his truck.

If you (or your friend) have Bronco for sale, please let me know.

Thanks.
