ATM & European Cirrus/Maestrocard

When in the DR I?ve always used Amex Traveller Cheques and several creditcards. I wonder if any European visitors have experience when using ATM?s that carry the Cirrus/Maestro sign.
Is use of these machines a better deal than exchanging travellercheques ? All suggestions or comments welcome. De antemano, gracias.

You get the nominal exchange rate (better than travellers cheques or cash) plus a small fee charged by you bank (Citibank DM 5,-) Don't wait until you are too low on cash to withdraw - if the phones are out or the machines are empty (Sunday evenings) you can't get cash out.
