Driving from Cabarete to Jarabacoa...? How long?

A small group of us (4-5) are thinking of renting a car and driving from Cabarete to Jarabacoa. How long does this take? (And how difficult for U.S. drivers?) And where could I find some good directions?

We're looking to try some of the rafting or mountain biking or canyoning with Rancho Baiguate, and I'm not sure if we should just make it a day trip, or try to stay the night.

All suggestions are welcome, and greatly appreciated!

Under 2 hours, depending on traffic in Santiago.

Hotel Pinar Dorado is owned by the Rancho Baiguate folks and is convenient to it. Nice place, too.

Thanks mate. So you pass through Santiago to get to Jarabacoa, yeah? Two hours isn't bad.

Hotel Pinar Dorado looks like it might be just a bit outside of our budget range, though if we have to do it that's what we'll do. Anyone know of cheap, cheap places to stay in Jarabacoa? :)

Second question for anyone who can answer (may have to make a new thread for this)...any idea how long to get from Jarabacoa to the Punta Cana area, or to Bahayibe? That's where our trip will end, but we need to get an idea of how long that drive will be.

You could head to the next town Sabaneta de Yasica heading east and take the Moca route through Jamao. If you cut through Moca you'll end up on the Autopista Duarte right after the airport and then head over to Jarabacoa.

Make sure you get a map.

Thanks for the suggestion and the number, Bob, I'll give them a call.

Ricardo, thanks for the suggestion - that sounds like it dodges the city completely, eh? I'll bet it's a more scenic drive as well. How much longer is it than going straight through Santiago?

I never timed it, but I hear the Moca route is a better and safer road than the other Mountain road(turistica). But if you mean by "going straight through Santiago" you are taking the long route through Puerto Plata and then wiggling your way through Santiago to end up on Autopista Duarte. Then yes it will take much longer and being your first time doing it, you'll most likely get lost.

But either way decide, get a decent map and take your time. No need to rush in the DR. Enjoy your trip!

Got it, thanks Ricardo.

Something else I should ask to anyone who can answer (I'm sure it's been asked a thousand times) is: do we really need a 4WD SUV to make these drives? Or will that just make it easier? Or will it make no real difference?

Sorry Cobra, just missed your reply! That looks like a really beautiful spot. I'll check it with the others.
