This is my first post. Any information about living in the DR would be helpful. We are planning to move to the Sosua area. Cost of living, safety issues, what to watch out for etc.
Thanks
Judith

Use the "search function" and peruse the "Living" section. You will find this topic has been covered at length.

Nice place to live only comparable with the paradise; nice beaches, restaurants, bars, casinos, stores.... Cost of living anywhere will depend in your life stile, but it is no high as in the US or Canada. Safety is good but remembers you will have to take care of your self as the police department doesn’t work at all and some of the cops are corrupts.

I do not live in the D.R. but am considering if not moving at least a long term stay. I hae been to Sosua many times and once you are there for awhile and let everyone know you are el residente you will find the price of things goes down. Always ask for el residente menu

Judith, have you ever been to the DR? and you're obviously moving without doing any homework first?

Tor - What are those other places? Always looking to expand our choices.

We go to LaRoca and get the Residential Menu. The prices are decent and the food good.

what was your service like - ive only been twice and both times it was rather unfriendly or begrudging, so its not on my favourites list - I hate to think what its like if you ask for the cheaper menu, which I didnt

The residential menu at La Roca has decent prices and good food but what are the other places other than Baileys Cafeteria?

The service is probably the same whether you do the regular menu or the residential not overly friendly but professional so might as well ask for it and save some money. The food though is very good. Very good curry chicken, ginger chicken, chinese chicken w/veg, garlic fish. Just changed the residential menu and added seafood pasta but haven't tried it.

I have not eaten there in 2 years as they told me they stopped the residential menu and for the Canadian July summer turkey dinner they charged me 26% tax.

And when you compare that to Rocky's Thanks Giving Bash it paled in comparison

I live 1 block away so you can see how 1 mis-communication will end a consumer business relationship!

I did like the curry chicken and a couple dishes but don't slam the door on me !

I've been to la Roca a few times, and each time I ended up questioning why I went. But three times is the limit for me as far as second chances goes.

For those times when I did allow for forgiveness, I always believed the previous visit must have been a fluke; Maybe the waiter had a bad day, or maybe I had been unlucky and gotten their one bad waiter. The food was good enough to give it another try, but not again.

As others have mentioned, the food is very good, but overpriced, in my opinion. I also agree that the waiters are professional, but I discovered there is an underlying disregard for the customer (contempt might be a better word).

It appeared to me that attitude was almost institutionalized, like the waiters had an understanding and exhibited a collective disdain for gringo customers. At least that was my take.

All three times I've been there I had company. Each time there was a mix of Dominicans and gringos. What I saw was a complete deference toward the Dominicnas and a bias toward the gringos, so much so that it was noticeable, awkward, and uncomfortable.

In each of those visits, the waiters made obvious attempts to lead the ladies into ordering the most expensive meals on the menu, almost to the point of insulting the gringos, who would obviously be paying. By the way, the waiters in each case had a little entertainment trick to show the girls, much like an animation team would. Interesting.

It had the feel of a scam to me, and while no one said anything to the waiter, I noticed the men all ordered the lower priced items, and the women, well you guessed it, the most expensive dishes; Four people with a bill of over $250 US the last time, and that was indeed my last time.
