But I am not gonna Knock it down completely, if they can get themselves and their family out of poverty it is thumbs up from me. I just hope that they would clean up their lyrics a bit and stop promoting gangs, violence and drugs.

Don't like it? Don't listen to it. Easy. Find no value in it? You are probably not meant to. Don't blame a genre of music that has only been in the country for less than 20 years for the social ills plaguing the country. It is irresponsible. The number of people who listen to this music, in relation to the total population, is minimal. It registers as a blip. The problems of the DR and its impoverished youth were here before this and will be here after it. Instead of bashing it, look at the situation in these barrios that would make a kid only rap about money, drugs, sex, gangs and violence. If the music concerns you because of the filth it exploits, you should be concerned at the situations that have created the feelings, and not the vehicle which they use to voice themselves.

Blaming rap for the problems DR's problems is like blaming McDonald's for the fact that you (the proverbial "you") are fat. Or blaming a car because you can't drive.

People in the states have been saying the same thing about rap and hip hop for years. It has now grown into a GIANT industry because it appeals to the masses. Its art. It gives the poor a voice and an opportunity. I don't agree with a lot of the lyrics, but it's great that at least people art being creative and expressing themselves, and more than that...it gives them a way out of what they are singing about.
