Sorry Jack but your ambitions are like so many other foreigners who came here expecting a "good standard of living",

reality check 101:
what do you like to do with your life? what are your strong points?
do you have a trade?

don't expect to come here expecting to get a VP job offer because your from England

truth hurts but since your not settled here in the DR, save your plane ticket and think what your doing, ask your parents, common sense applies to everything

good luck

And you met your Dominican girl friend where???

Look, keep studying, get a degree or two and THEN think about coming to the DR to live and work...when you have something special to offer. Right now you have zilch, zero, nada, or in plain English NOTHING to offer the labor market here. You will become one of tens of thousands of young men and women, under educated, no job skills and without a snowball's chance of making a living..

Please thing this through.

"Dumb sh!t, you don't know what you are talking about!"

Well, young man, I raised four children of my own plus another seven that we sort of adopted...that means I equipped them, as far as they wanted to go, to deal with this world.

So I do know what i am talking about...

thanks for your replies but she will have her own salon in about a year and we are willing to wait i think your words are a bit harsh it cant all be that bad i just need to open the right doors and educate my self the right way

so you both are telling me i have 0% chance of making a decent living in DR? i am not looking to have tons of money just enoguh to have a house, car and a family in the future i met this girl in sosua and we talk on the phone and computer every night. we will make this work it may not be easy but anything is possible you put your mind to it and work hard.

please can any of you give me advice on what i should be studying to live in DR like a good trade i know i dont have anything to offer but for the future i really want to leave england and make a new life somewhere else.

ok, we were all 18 at some point even thou we may not remember :cheeky:
i will try to be nice, jake:
at 18 you have no profession and no experience. the only job you can perform is in a bar/hotel/restaurant and that pays very little here (about 100-200 british pounds a month).
living in sosua you will have no chance to work on your education: the closest university is in puerto plata (about 30 minute drive) or santiago (better university, 2hrs away).
in order to buy a house and a car (barrio location, cheap car) you will need about 10-15 thousand british pounds if not more.
can you see now that you will not make it?

i know it's love but take your time and learn some sort of profession in UK, if you have some brains you can become qualified english teacher or IT specialist, that will help. if you are more manual type: car mechanic should be able to find work...

oh, well, if you are a brainy type you have teaching and computing. fairly short time to achieve knowledge and certificates needed.
if manual: car repair, working with wood, maybe putting tiles.
you could also work in call center but closes one is in puerto plata, i think. and it does not pay much...

i am multi-talented :) i work in the office and do some freelance writing now...

don't overestimate english, this skill is pretty common. you will need a proper teaching degree in order to teach. there is an international school in sosua and i believe they offer decent pay to experienced teachers.
as far as IT goes: there are many things that can be done remotely. i have a friend who does repair, configuration and all that jazz of computers and voip systems. good pay.
you should really speak to specialists in both, we have them on dr1. post your questions in the living section and do not get upset when you hear bashing and sometimes harsh opinions.
best of luck!

Jake, how much time have you spent with your girlfriend?
Please go slowly and try to imagine what is going on down there when you are not around.

I would not even think about making such a move unless I had at least a year's worth of living expenses in the bank and/or the support of some rich parents.

A lot can change and be exposed by the time you graduate and have the funds to make the move.

If you are really serious, I would suggest you hire a private investigator to check her out.
A small investment up front could often save a lot of time, money, and heartache.

Good luck.

So you met this female in Sos?a. that tells us a lot, I am afraid.

Please for God's sake stay in England. Learn a good trade. Computers, graphic design, anything modern, no matter.

DV8 was trying to be gentle. I am sorry, there is no gentle way to tell you this...

Wake up!!
the odds are so astronomically against you as to be more than a Division III team winning the Champion's League or winning the lottery....say 174 million to one...

Sorry, really, love especially love of really great sex, can be powerful but this is not a good thing to follow.

The BEST way to be successful in the DR Jake is to do what you ENJOY doing. Someone asked this questions quite a few posts ago & you have not responded to it yet ....... What do you LIKE doing? What HOBBIES & interests do you have that you might turn into a profession here?

The other item that has not been covered yet is your lack of LIFE experience. Don't get all hot under the collar with that comment as it is not made as criticism, it is just a fact that as yet, you have not had to deal with scam artists wanting to rook you for every centavo you make. This will not just be the Dominicans believe me, it will also be from your fellow countrymen - those who pry on the inexperienced who need help & will believe most of what they are told!!

I am intrigued by your comment that your girlfriend will have her own salon in a year (or two) - is she funding this herself from her present income or will she have her family to buy it for her? Have you worked on the business plan with her & does it make complete sense? Is it VIABLE in Sosua alongside the other 500 plus salons? What will be the marketing strategy to set it apart from all the others?

I am sure we all wish you good luck - if you come to live here before you are 25 you are going to NEED that 'luck' ........ & that is HONEST!! ~ Grahame.

Jake, before you spend any more time planning, get the girl checked out. If she turns out to be....er....disloyal in your absence, you won't even want to hear the name Sosua or Dominican Republic ever again, or at least not for some time.

Did you meet on a 2 week holiday here? By any chance were your parents with you on that holiday? Could you get one of them to sign up on DR1 & we'll talk to them? I know you won't want to hear it, if you're in love you're unable to hear it, but Mum & Dad might appreciate a 'telling it how it is' description of life in the raw in Sosua. Alternatively, Mr. & Mrs. Black, you could PM any of the experienced residents/posters for an honest account of the chances of this working out for your son. I'm sure you are concerned for the welfare of your son, as any parent would be. And because a number of us are in the same age group as a parent of Jake would be, we are concerned too.

Jake - best advice is to stay in England and do a degree or learn a trade first - the opportunities in higher education here (UK) are in a different league.

Save some money and spend a gap year in the DR and see how it goes - do not expect to earn a comfortable living on your own from English teaching. Have known several who have tried.

Cold Shower Time

Odds are very strong that the girl is a puta.

She sees you as the meal ticket.

Don't be a pendejo.

Finish your education in the UK and acquire some solid marketable skills. Master the English language. You need work in your native tongue.

"Nice" girls require a chaperone, did her sister accompany you on your first date?

You never answered that question.
