Other than with a big stick!

OK, it's been mentioned before and it's just an idea but the time has come for proper, coordinated action. Here is the plan:

Get an indelible pen (available on-line) but a lot of CD Markers are just as good and write your name and address on your TV, DVD, Laptop etc. For the less intelligent amongst us not over the screen eh?

Now I KNOW that it won't stop petty crime BUT a lot of petty thieves pass their stuff on to a middle man for cash. In turn, the fence will not pay the same money for an item that was so obviously stolen.

If enough of us marked our electronics we could quite possibly make it just not worth stealing the stuff in the first place. Now I know that eventually the fence will sell it on at the same price that he always did to some unsuspecting twit who can't even read BUT he runs a greater risk for carrying stolen goods because he might get caught holding them and he WILL give the thief less money for it.

Come on everyone - How long will it take? Five minutes of your time. What have you got to lose?

If enough of us do it it WILL make a difference.

Are these the kind of pens that show up under ulta violet light?

If so i have thought of this before mainly for our business equipment as much of it is specialist stuff and wouldnt be at all useful for the average joe and only a few people in the country be suspects.

Well anyway you have jogged my memory and im going to do it.

The way i see it is, ok maybe it will work, maybe it wont but i hate the very common thinking here of "Dont bother, No point!".

I think putting CCTV shells up out of reach on the walls outside the property would act as a deterrent. You can buy them with a small red light that run from AA batteries (gives them a real look and makes them obvious at night). They are completely fake but only cost the price of a slab of beer for 2. Put them in obvious places and I would have thought that might work.
Either that or electrify the grills around the property.

Stealing the show

Why is it whenever I post something someone contradicts me? All I said was buy a magic marker pen and write all over the back of your electronic equipment. Those stupid camera's with the flashing lights don't prevent robbery except of course from the schmuck that bought one!

I'm glad you've got an idea - post it, but don't hijack and dilute my thread dude. Did you buy a pen? Did you mark your stuff? Do you even f'ing well live here? I damned well don't know and don't really care.

Here's an idea. If you mark your stuff with an indelible pen then post here telling everyone how good it made you feel and encourage others to do the same. If you haven't yet done so what's your excuse? And if you want to suggest something else then write up a new thread.

Oh, and I don't really see the point in the pens that you need a black light to see the markings with. If the police had one of those lights they would just donate it to the local carwash party.

What you are trying to create is a more obvious deterent.

Come on DR1'ers, let's get scribbling.

Umm... maybe try to read the responses as complementary suggestions rather than contradictions.

Are you on drugs? I am not sure what you want from a forum if you don't want a discussion. Try writing yourself a letter if you only want to read your opinions on things.
Do I think your idea is a good idea? No, not at all, writing your name on things will not stop anything being stolen and only decrease the value of your own valuables should you ever come to sell them on yourself.
If you are waiting for people to write on valuables and then get back to you about it, then I feel you will have a long wait.
Happy scribbling :ermm:

Let's aim for constructive discussion, not argument - or the thread gets zapped.

I tried that and got abuse, did you not notice that??
I did indeed. As Thandie says some slack is in order but I don't really blame you for responding in that way. I tried to preempt it by soothing the ruffled feathers - see post 6.

Hold On a Mo.....

I write about centipedes, someone writes about scorpions, I write about how you can't get your residency in Santiago anymore and someone says that they did, I make a suggestion that everyone makes an effort to write their name / address on the bottom / back of your telly and again someone tells us not to do that but to install plastic fake cameras with a flashing LED that wouldn't fool a five year old.

Do I see a pattern forming?

I've lived here for six years, I believe that I have a worthwhile opinion and of course others are entitled to theirs, but I only occassionally use this forum nowadays because it is becomming a minefiled of mis-information haunted by dozens of dumbsters that think they f'ing well know it all when some of them don't even live here.

It makes me wonder, it really does. And then the bull$hit nonsense that gets generated! Can I state for the record that nobody EVER broke into my house, that I have extremely good security arrangements and to suggest anything to the contrary is frankly not appropriate.

Good Day

All this stress these forums are forcing on you is without a doubt a terrible experience. Maybe you need a holiday?

Or you could toughen up a little and stop throwing your toys outa the pram!

Threads are for sharing info and discussing, not for lecturing from up high.

We mods try to keep them on track, but as with all discussions there are bound to be diversions from the main theme. A thread with the title "How to beat petty thieves" will inevitably involve other posters' tips and comments on the matter as well as the OP's.

Thread closed, as this has long descended into over-reaction and counter-reaction.
