Difference between a bank and a "cooperativA" ?

Does anyone know the pros and cons between having a savings acount in a bank versus a "cooperativa", are the interest rates way better ?

From what I understand, a bank is a bank and a "cooperativa" is more like the old S&L's.

And cooperativa's pretty much just lend on housing.
