Sancocho is a soup that is kind of creamy with all sorts of anything that you want to put in the soup. Meat, yucca, avocado. It sure helps out to have some after hanging out all night. Try it out to recover from a bad hang-over. You can only order it in Dominican restaurants like El Batatica on Pedro Clisante, Sosua, right behind the Carniseria del nino. Party on, peeps after a good Sancocho. A Motoconcho should be able to take you there for less than 50c.

They also sell it at the food counter at the La Sirena markets for lunch. Quite good.
Also at the Boceto rest & grill 24/7 next to the Matum Casino close to the Monument.
Also quite good. Boceto delivers.

yucca must be eaten with Avocado. You add the avocado after the san cocho is cooked. A piece of avocado in to your mouth at the same time as a piece of yucca.

Sancocho is eaten with avocado wedges on the side, and rice. I've only ever eaten it once, when Aunt Clara made a vegetarian version. Apart from the yaut?a, I liked it.

A good sancocho with avocado on the side... sure!

MRJone said "...anything that you want to put in the soup. Meat, yucca, avocado." I'd just never thought there was avocado IN it!

If you're in SD, go to any of the Adrian Tropical restaurants, they give you a complimentary little wooden bowl of it as soon as you sit down to look at the menu. I've made it for many years - the creaminess comes from taking some of the yautia [prefer yellow] and squash [calabaza, like pumpkin] out and mashing it before returning it to the pot. Several different meats are usually used - beef, chicken, pork, some add goat. Avocado is never cooked in sancocho - it's served on the side and most people put pieces into the bowl and eat it together. Some eat it with white rice, not all.
Never heard of it as a hangover remedy, but live and lean!

Any protein-rich meal is a good hangover remedy!
The squash is called auyama in the DR.

Sancocho is not "cream" based but may look like it because of all of the different vegetables in it break down with the meat to form a type of gravy. I actually like it to be a little watery with less platano and more yucca and auyama and especially corn on the cob pieces.

You got it. That is how it sounds. Try it next time when you come over at El Batatica...Any motoconcho in Sosua will take you there. The restaurant is a block away from La Pasion.
