Hello
I am in my mid thirties, single travelling from the USA to DR sometime in August. After reading all your very knowledgeable posts I am inclined to stay at Hotel Voramar in Sosua, thinking of getting an apartment for 10 days , would that be a wise move?I do plan on cooking my own food by shopping at the supermarkets in Sosua( dont mind the distance as I will shop only once for that), and would like to have a nice time in the evenings
Any reply would be greatly appreciated.

Condos Dominicanos is an excellent recomendation! I used to own there and lived there full time for one month when I first arrived in the DR. The administrator is called Colin Dymond and he's a good guy, wont rip you off!
Have fun!!!

If you're not familiar with the location, it's in the town centre just around the corner from Super Super and the town hall.

Greetings,

You can certainly cook in the apartments in Voramar, and you can have guests over for the evening if you wish. The location is a bit on the outskirts of downtown Sosua, so you would need to take a moto every day unless you don't mind a good 20 minute walk (not too fun in the Summer heat) to get downtown.

The place is neatly kept with nice landscaping as well...if you like to play tennis there are courts available. I'm not familiar with Condos Dominicano so I can't compare the two.

Friends, Greetings and thanks so much for all your replies, I have tentatively decided to go with Voramar, I don't mind the ride to town as it will be only one day--Voramar for me scored more because of the less work I need to do to find company--plus the pools look great. I will update in preparation of my trip and also my trip report.
Thanks for all the help

Well, I will only shop one day and get all the stuff--I saw in the forums that there is usually company in the bar at Voramar in the nights--or the casino:)

the apartments in voramar have no ac... its very hot there in august, but they are really nice. Voramar is away from everything but its a pretty nice place and the owners are ok . I'm not a fan of Pedro the night security guy , but everyone else is ok there. its mostly europeans that stay there, but you get a few americans too. good luck where ever you decide to stay. feel free to pm me with any questions you have , I stay there often and i know quite a bit about sosua.

Yeah there are a few girls around the bar, and you will be safe with them as they are known. after a few days you will probably venture out to the disco. you can rent a scooter from one of the guys there for about $17 a day . put the helmet on if you hit the main road , the cops will pull you over.

No A.C., far away from the center of town, and a few stragler chicas in the voramar bar.Sounds like a great trip to me, NOT!!!!! The guys at voramar may be nice but the place is in the middle of no mans land. It's not like the voramar is some secluded resort. You go ahead and have a very boring vacation stuck in the outskirts of sosua choosing from some girls that are to ugly to work the discos.
But the good news is that its not to late, read the forums on hotels in sosua and find a nice hotel in town like seabreeze or rockys etc...you wont pay a lot and you will be closer to town. If you want to cook then there are hotels in town like the europa that have kitchens. If you are looking for female company, then your best options are at the discos or many small bars in the center of town.

Okay-tell me what the other option is--get a condo somewhere in town where I can cook and also have a safe box--for me the major factors affecting my accomodation are that I be able to cook and that I should be in a visitor friendly place--but that place has to be very secure:)

I have stayed at the Voramar twice, including last August. The room I had was big and comfortable. In room safe, ac, fan, hot water. The view from the balcony was nice, especially when a storm came in. The pool is great, spent many afternoons trying to imitate Michael Phelps. Well, ok, maybe his grandfather. The bar is the real drawing card though. The chicas I saw there were quite attractive and the bartenders were hot also. Not bad for $45 a night. Plus, being out of the way a bit, no motos constantly making noise. Always slept soundly. Pedro the security guy was alright with me. Even tipped him on my last night before heading home. I didn't cook so can't speak for the apts.

It is true the best options for female company are the bars/discos in town. However the distance from Voramar isn't a problem since you will return there (with your new friend you met) by moto anyway...it is not like your "stuck in no man's land"...
And the girls in the bar at Voramar DO "work" in the bars/discos as well, they will just "go fishing" at Voramar from time to time when they know there are enough tourists staying there, that way they have less competition and greatly improve their odds of "landing a catch"...

I stayed at Voramar Staff and hotel were quite nice Rooms had AC and were furnished quite well. Pool was ok but i didnt see anyone actually used they are lady friendly and there should be any problem for you. What I liked to do was go for morning breakfast and look at all the differnt chicas that spent the night at the hotel. Quite amusing at who they were with but hay who am I to speak. They have Motochonco's out side the hotel by the tree no more than 20 peso's to town no matter what they say. Have fun.......

You know the answer about providing company

With all your posts you know the answer. This forum and others is full of statements about Sosua being full of Mongors and working girls. The definition of a mongor is one who trades in it but in this case it is short for Whore Mongor or men who seek sex from woman for a favor typically cash. Voramars site shows the pool cats aka pool pussy cats that want to play. Let him enjoy it.

You are right, I don't know why everyone puts this place aside and suggests others by all the noise and smoke from exhaust. Why do people go on vacation to a place like this? Many reasons Peace, Quiet or Not so Quiet (but best when you decide), nightlife, climate, legal prostitution, because it certainly isn't that the DR is known for gourmet food.
