Default CELL PHONES US to DR

a friend asks me to bring him a unlocked cell phone from the US.
will he be able to get a cell provider in DR (e.g. Orange) on a pay-as-you-go basis? is this workable or would it be better to get him a cell phone locally?
    muchas gracias.

The cell will have to be GSM and quad band. A sim chip can be bought from Orange or Claro or whatever for pay as you go. The phone can be unlocked when you get to DR.

if your friend is your boyfriend...beware...you are setting yourself up to bring more expensive gifts in the future.

you can buy a new cell at the orange shop with some minutes for as low as 300 pesos...goes up depending on the quality of the phone.

if you bring the phone from the US you can have it unlocked and registered for about 300-500 pesos as well.

You can buy an activated Alcatel Cell phone in DR for RD$300 including $RD100 credit! If you want to get fancy there are nicer phones for under $RD1000...why bother bringing a phone that needs to be unlocked, activated and possibly eating up hours of your vacation time to get working?

Thanks a lot - that's what I thought: much better to buy local.
