In case anyone passing is wondering why - it's because 8 doctors and a nurse started a hunger strike this morning. When I was there this morning Plaza Independencia (Parque Central) had a load of military, some top brass & some of the intelligence forces. Police were fewer in number, but quite a few Politur. I saw some tourists allowed to visit Cathedral but in small groups only, not a busload. It looks from newspaper reports that by this afternoon, tourist visits were not being allowed. This afternoon there was an incident when a man who had been trying to get medical help for a Haitian child for a number of days, took the child to the Cathedral. Some supporters of the strike thought this was a provocation & attacked him & he had to be protected by police.
