In less than 48 hours i arrive in the DR. My passion is dog training. Now i was wondering. Who has a dog or dogs(which breed), where does he/she lives and what does he/she do with them. Plus what do you want to do with them.

Greetings

what kind of training you do?

My origins are in Belgian Ring the oldest and toughest policedog training. This involves everything from basic obedience to incredible jumps, from scent discrimination to a search and escort of a criminal and the fun part ( for the dog ) toying with a decoy. Other words bitework. This all down to earth, only practical work in mind.
Besides that i started training a dog in SAR but instead of search and rescue the dog went for search and destroy :tired:? Wrong dog for the job; happens.
I've trained attackdogs for a european army, i've trained you're average pet and the only dogs i don't like training are toydogs. They are to smart for me :surprised

I have a Perenese puppy, four months old called Rufus. I live in Higuey.

I am having terrible trouble house training him, and as someone mentioned previously in a post about dogs being poisoned i would like him to be trained to refuse food that is not given to him in his bowl :ermm:

ALso if he could learn to make a cup of tea that would be nice ;)

Let me know if you are ever in my area

Thanks

p.s if you could train him to do some acrobatics would be great for my show ha ha

I would definitely like you to take a look at Bella Rosa and maybe assess what you think she is capable of. She's 9 months now and we got her from Judy at the Asociaci?n De Amigos Por Los Animales De Sos?a on their adoption programme, last January. We're in PP, as you know, with a medium sized grass area for training purposes.

She is very bright, Heinz57 breed ;) and if not fully occupied, her talents tend to become delinquent :cheeky:. Anything which the bus mechanics and washers leave on our back wall or stuck in our railings, she steals. She waits until no-one is looking though - we have a collection of sponges, mop heads, T shirts, jackets, squeezy bottles and even some tools, all carried round to the front of the house surreptitiously. We have now trained the mechanics not to leave things there, so Bella Rosa is turning her attention to be gardener's assistant and demolishing the cayena. :) Obedience she is pretty ok on, just chooses not to sometimes...or 'forgets' that something is a 'no'. Maybe some memory training? Grahame & I will join that part as well.............!

I don't think full protection training is required, but some of the techniques would be helpful. She is very quick to learn, loves challenges & is a great jumper. This is the only Dominican dog I have ever met which when we first had had, showed absolutely no fear of anything. We had to teach her a little bit of fear so that she could make sound judgements, & she's getting there with that - another area for you to look at. We don't have a problem with dog poisoning in our area, but I would like for her to learn how to refuse bad food. Her stealing tendencies aren't a problem btw, just highly entertaining. In fact she's a wonderfully amusing dog. But obviously we don't have the time to keep her occupied with different challenges all day long, so some protection training which we could then reinforce would probably be a good idea. And I'm sure she'd love it!

Hi Johan...

I'm in Cabrera with 3 dogs.... 2 of which are the main trouble makers! We aren't really looking for much in the way of protection training, but would love some help with general pet training. Our oldest lived on the street for a few years before we took her in so she has several 'quirks'... one being a wild howl which our neighbours would really rather they never had to hear again! Our other two we rescued from the street as puppies. The middle one is usually very well-behaved, just a bit timid, then the youngest (about 6 months old) is turning into quite the trouble-maker. She's very jumpy and loves to beg for food.... and nothing we try seems to be working! :/

we are in POP and we have a five (and a bit) month old rottweiler puppy.
she is very clumsy and seems dumb but she is, in fact, quite smart.
i do obedience training with her myself and she does obey few commands. even when excited or playful she will sit when told to.
i have been also training her to leave the food when ordered - even her favourite bones. she almost bit my finger off but it was my fault - i tried to pull a small piece of food out of her mouth. now she drops her food or gives it away. i am sure thou that she'd succumb to the temptation of a nice poisoned steak.
what we want to do, eventually, when there is money for it, is to take her for protection training. i want her to attack and bite when needed. and if possible to jump directly at a throat at the sight of a gun or knife.

Interesting feedback.
For the time being it is rather hectic here. Only 24 hours left and so much to do.

I'll be living in the neighborhood of Santiago but will travel.
I'm thinking of organizing somewhere in a fortnight or so a little "training" to asses the different dogs, what they and the owners are wanting and or prepared to do.
For food refusal let someone give your dog something and when the dog wants to take it punish him that is the dog)

Hi Johan,

I'm on the North coast and have a pair of Malinois. One three year old male who is French ring trained and a female puppy who is four months old and will need to start her training soon.

The girlfriend also has a Chihuahua which keeps them both in check!

You're more than welcome to visit and give an evaluation on my dogs and their training. Barney could probably do with a refresher course anyway.

No problem, are you planning to train your oldest further? Because in 2010 there will probably be an NVBK (belgian ring) international tournament in the DR as a test for a world championship you could compete

Hi Heldengebroed,
I had contacted you before, I am so glad you're in Santiago!! Don't have my puppy yet...toyed with the idea of a lab, or german shepherd, but I am actually going to wait for Hillbilly's Great Dane to find his love and have some puppies. I want one just like Yoshi (that is Hillbilly's dog) because he is HUGE and Intimidating but such a sweetheart.
I will like basic house training as my boyfriend and housekeeper (both Dominicans) feel that dogs do not belong in the house, where as I feel completely opposite. I would like them to see first hand that yes a dog CAN live in a house and be actually better trained than the kids!;)
I do also want to train him (or her) not to eat any food not placed in a certain bowl and also to maybe if possible bark at sign of guests (not necessarily attack)...OK maybe attack on command.
I will contact you as soon as I have him (or her)...

Hi Heldengebroed

I live in Bavaro, Punta Cana, we have a 1 year old French Bull Dog called "Ozzy"
and a Yorkie 5 months old called "Osbourne" both are into rock music but that's about it.
So far have managed to get Ozzy to sit only if I have a piece of food in my hand and Osbourne is just like a free range chicken.

Help.

cheers

Looks like you'll be busy! If ever you're in the Punta Cana area, Punta Cana Village is chock full of dogs and several owners have asked me (I'm known as the animal woman...) if there are any trainers in the area. Our airport has a training program with many highly trained dogs but I believe the trainer only comes several days a month to train those dogs specifically. So if you're ever interested, we could set up a training clinic for however is interested and then take it from there.

BTW, I person own a very smart rottie (understands more than a kid) and a follow-the-leader Chihuahua. ;)

Ok put juan Dolio on your list for your nationwide tour. One Great dane who loves burying his dribbling jowls in visitors' crotches and goes totally deaf whenever I talk to him but not anyone else. One great Dane female (daughter of said crotch sniffer) who mistakes owner's leg for cat and bites it but who kills cats, and one racist half pit bull half lab who would happily murder anything especially if it is black.
