I'm in NJ and I want to buy an inverter for my dad who lives in Santo Domingo DR. After searching this forum I still have a lot of questions. Well I was looking for a 1.5kilos inverter cuz I think that's enough for a refrigeratoR, 3 fans and like 10 lightbulbs. I want gel batteries cuz I've heard those are the best.

In google I found a 1500w duracell inverter for a good price, but are they good for DR?

Here is what I found.

Duracell Digital Inverter 1500 DC to AC power inverter - 1.5 kW

What do you think?

DJ. is right I have a 1.5 in my home and the fridge will not work. some things to think about.....1.5 is small only the basics, lights, fan, sockets and such. I went originally to plaza lama to buy in santiago and they wouldnt install since we live in Imbert, they also wouldnt gurantee because they didnt install. What we ended up doing was looking local at a store who sold and installed and it came with a year gurantee on everything. Remember they have to install the inverta, the battery's and run the lines in the house with connection to the ,,fuse box. Paid 17.000 pesos for the 2 battery's,inverta ,new fuse box, fuses and the electrical lines. Hope this helps

while interesting, that inverter would probably last 10 minutes powering the devices you list. get an inverter here in the DR -- in the US people don't generally know much about them.

I had a 1.5 with 2 batteries. It kept flipping the inverter breaker when I put the ref. on the line. I upt it to an excellant 3.6 with 8 batteries, maybe overkill, but it does the job. Keep 2 things seperate. The inverter is for the energy needed, the batteries are for the length of time desired. I would NOT recommend a 1.5 for your stated needs.

That device is an inverter only, you need an inverter/charger of about 3k and about 8 batteries. If money is no object get this one, light weight, take it in your luggage. about $2200 new $1200 refurbished. XANTREX PROSINE 3.0 / 24V TRUE SINEWAVE INVERTER CHARGE - eBay (item 390079044537 end time Sep-05-09 21:56:21 PDT)

Then give him another $1500 for 8 batteries and installation.

LOL, I doubt someone considering a $115 inverter will be interested in a solution that costs over $3500!!

While that may well be the case, the product chosen by the OP is totally unsuited for the task of running household items in Santo Domingo and at least the posting by Luperon recognizes this and tells him what a viable alternative will cost. The OP did recognize that the real solution would cost more than $115US as he acknowledged that "gel batteries" was what he wanted; but of course without a charging system the batteries would serve no purpose.

Thank you.

I wish I could say thanks for your colaboration but no. How do you know I'm not interested in a $3500 solution or better said, that I can't afford it? Has it crossed your mind that I'm able to spend that or more but maybe I don't want to. Anyway, I asked the question about inverters because first, I don't know anything about them second, since prices are double for everything in DR and I thought I might find it cheaper here in the USA

You can save the sarcasm for others people's post, I certainly don't appreciated.

Trojan Red batteries were 4,300 pesos, about $120 each, this week. You can get either 4, 8 or 16 batteries for such a system depending upon how long your blackouts are. US Battery 2200s were out of stock, but would have been about 4,000 pesos each.

4, 8, 12 or 16 Batteries....

Xantrex TR2424 2400 watt 24 volt Inverter / Charger - eBay (item 390084681314 end time Aug-31-09 13:44:47 PDT)

Above is an example of an inverter from Xantrex that is 2.4 KW for $898 US in the US.

so that Xantrex 2.4 that you showed me, is that a good price in ebay or is it less expensive in DR? Also, to my understanding it comes with the charger right? so besides that I will only need the batteries and you recomend Trojan.

Thank you so much, I'm starting to understand more about inverters.

I just recently installed a 1.5k inverter/charger with two batteries in my apartment. The inverter and batteries were actually installed outside the apartment under a protected area with wires running over the roof and down the pipe to the breaker panel.

Plaza Llama in SDQ had a sale on the inverter & battery package that included installation for around 19000.00 pesos. It will run the basics; lights, fans, TV, stereo but not the refrigerator. Sure beats sitting around in the dark!

You can buy ready made frames to hold the batteries. The frames are bolted to the wall near the inverter and have provision for a padlock. Most hardware stores seem to sell them. A four-battery frame runs around 1000.00 pesos.

...... windeguy, if installing an inverter in an apartment what is the best location for the batteries?

You should have the batteries as close as possible to the "Inverter",
as it is a low voltage / high current circuit.

Keep in mind the security of both the Inverter and the Batteries at all times.
