harassment at the beach

My daughter's nerves are completely fried from living in the capital, and she desperately needs to relax at the beach. Her fiance works all day, though, and she says she can't go to the beach by herself because she is treated like a prostitute. (She said that even when she has gone with just her girlfriends, she is still harassed.) Any suggestions? She really needs to find somewhere peaceful to relax. Thanks. (I am up here in the States; otherwise, of course, I would go with her.)

i would suggest she unwinds on a hotel beach (maybe with a day pass) where there are many people. she should place herself close to old ladies or families with kids. maybe bring a book (prostitute is not likely to show up on a beach with a book :) ).

I would suggest the restaurant Boca Marina, in Boca Chica. It's not far from Santo Domingo (about 1 hr, depending on traffic) and a lovely place to relax, get a nice meal and take a swim. There is no beach, but it is directly over the water. You can see pictures here.

In my opinion, the only resort option close to Santo Domingo (Oasis Hamaca Resort) is not worth the money. Some friends and I arrived at noon and after paying +/- US$45, we could not find a single beach chair in the shade. We had plenty of resort employees/sankies harassing us for pictures and the like, so it wasn't very relaxing for us.

too much worried for nothing.
there are just 2 beaches with prostitutes in dominican rep. Boca Chica and Sosua. In any other beach she will be fine. I suggest Juan Dolio or Guayacanes if she is close to santo domingo, also Embassy beach.
if she goes to the north , pop, playa dorada or cabarete ar ok.
One thing that I have noticed. whores never go into the water.

I would argue with you about sosua beach, you wouldnt be treated as a prostitute, I know coz ive tried to be one ...I have no idea why you would even say that, prostitutes are only to be found in certian venues

Agree with JR about sosua and prostitutes.

They don't really walk the beach looking for customers. Therefore, why would they mistake a womaon for a whore. In Sosua, they are found in certain establishments.

the day pass idea is a good one.

she can relax, eat lunch, enjoy the beach, maybe chat with some other americans.

sometimes when you are surrounded by spanish speaking people all day, a little english and conversation with someone from home can make all the difference in the world and give you the pick up that you need.

So many assumptions, with so little evidence.

I agree with jr. While there might be prostitutes on any given beach, at any given time (in or out of the water) any harassment that exists comes from certain Dominicanos, and they will give the same type of attention to any unescorted woman, anywhere on the island.

It is simply a wide-spread cultural practice, and happens everywhere. Beaches are no exception, but beaches are certainly not an exclusive venue for this type of behavior, nor does it occur more frequently there, in my opinion.

Catcher and I seem to have the same viewpoint. I don't see the OP's daughter being viewed as a prostitute, just another target for the heat seeking missiles that "some" latino men are! LOL

I agree that any unescorted woman is harassed in the DR, regardless of race or nationality or location! lol beach, street, your front porch.... Its a questionable custom, but customary, nonetheless. All you have to do is IGNORE IGNORE IGNORE and they leave you alone. Its really not that big of a deal. Tell her to grab her beach stuff and get to it! Long as she pretends they arent there, they will just go harass the next chick lol

Juan Dolio / Guyacanes beaches are a lot quieter than Boca Chica. Your daughter could also just take a guy friend/family member with her...that should keep other men away...

I am not sure if I am to understand that the daughter in question is Dominican or "Gringa". Really, it can affect her as the type of harassment she may encounter quite fundamentally.

If she is Dominican or Dominican looking, it all boils down to her attire, way to have her hair and overall demeanor. The overwhelming majority of Dominicanas can not in any way be mistaken as prostitutes because they put great emphasis not to look like one, dress like one or some "Barrio Queenie". Yes, even dress code conscious women will have a tale of a Gringo having walked up to them and asked "how much" to tell... but this is not what they experience all day. Aditionally, let it be reminded, that it usually is working girls (and boys) who harass tourists visiting our beaches and other "hot spots".

If she is a "Gringa" and on top of it white, yes, she is more likely to be approached by "Sankies" and other hot headed, usually local men trying to hit on her. Again, demeanor, dresscode consciousness (selfrespecting Dominicanas will never be seen in public top less or in Brasilian typ baithing suites) will have a great influence on her exposure. Also, whom she is with, will also greatly influence how and by whom she may be approached.

Lastly, as others mentioned, I agree, that hanging around Boca Chica and the bars of places like the ones prevalent in Sosua, may enhance her exposure to harassement and undesirable contacts.

Goes both ways... A dress-code conscious gringa like me can be on my way home from work in a long sleeve blouse and slacks (that properly fit and are not skin-tight) and I will still get piropos. Heck, even when I'm coming home from the gym and sweating up a storm in my ratty gym clothes I get them! It's just a way of life, no matter what you wear, and you eventually learn to deal. I find the finger waggle works 90% of the time. After that a firm "no" also works.

Having said that, I have found that the harassment at the public Boca Chica beaches is just too much. Dominican friends, both men and women, agree with me.
