I read somwhere to not expect much as far as nightlife in Sosua. Is that true? Would Boca Chica be better is I want to relax on beach during day and nightlife at night?

I've been to Sosua over 10 times and the nightlife their is GREAT! It's a great mix of tourists and Dominicans with lots of bars and a few dance clubs to choose from. I haven't been to Boca Chica so I can't comment their. The beauty of Sosua is its location. You are 10 minutes to Cabarete and about 15 minutes to Puerto Plata so their are actually 3 towns with great nightlife to explore. Hope this helps!

Best,

DS

It will depend what are you looking for.
there are some decent dinning options in sosua, but as far as quality night life as Acapulco, cancun, south beach , santo domingo, etc, forget it, neither of those places has it.
for decent night life (not great), Cabarete or playa dorada are ok. ther is a decent club also in Ocean world in cofresi.
If you are into cheap night life with whores and sankies. either sosua or boca chica are your places.

Yes, define your concept of night life.

  • Cabarete has somewhat of a unique almost European touch. The crowd is generally young an fit (surfing) and less geared towards the sexual offerings of this country. There are some fine non AI hotels and a long strip of fine dining restaurants and bistro-bars lining the beach. Some Caribbean touch places, others more Jazzy and hip.

  • Sosua has some tourists. Some are just tourists others are singles enjoying the "freedom" of being able to legally retain the services of hookers and semi pros of both sexes, which imposes a strong red light district touch on most of the "night life" and some of the day light life. It may seem an impressive and open intermingling of Dominicans and foreigners, but selfrespecting Dominicans will not be seen seen around the night life areas of this town after sundown. In other words, be aware of whom you may "befriend", 99% chances are, that they are from very poor and low education back ground, directly or indirectly are linked to a, lets say "loose" life and have experience on making a living, one way or another with people who leave just as they came.

  • Puerto Plata (town) has less night life by every night that goes by. Really, the economy, or lack thereof, starts to show there. The Malecon (Ocean side boulevard), had become a "clean" place for decent Domincan families of low to middle class, to take a stroll and have a drink and watch their children run around. Apart of a few hotspots mostly attracting "kids", and a few bars which still try to double as a stock market for meat for a few old broke residents drinking their days away, it was quite a nice place to observe "real" Domincan weekend or after work life. As I said, it has quiten down quite a bit, except for Saturday afternoons and Sundays.

  • Cofresi (West out of Puerto Plata) has the Casino and a quality high end Las Vegas type dinner show. There is a marina and some more expensive homes which atract a different clientele.

  • Boca Chica (since the subject has been brought up). I don't live there, but I have visited it several times spread over now almost 5 years and even spent an extended weekend there a couple of months ago. I am one who will not be seen in bars in Sosua... so really, Boca Chica is a place which night life does NOT attract me. I usually just have a fried fish at the West end parking lot, and that time, I felt really uncomfortably unsafe. Even had a guy with a tourist office tag offer me fist half of his underage female family of sale or rent and then, coke with the choice of the Colombian or the Venezuelan stuff! The beach is lined with Haitian hookers and their husband pimps... both mostly ugly and quite aggressive, as well as Haitian peddeling paintings, fried banana chips and so forth... all obviously not very easily accepting a "no thanks". I think that if cheap unsafe sex is ones meaning of "great night life" Boca Chica must be heaven.

  • I don't go out nights in Santo Domingo, but I understand that it offers all levels and ranges and qualities of night life and entertainment. Some is even off range to "common" folks without a high level introduction.

you may want to say A GREAT MIX OF TOURISTS AND DOMINICAN PROS AND SANKIES. decent medium class and up dominican dont go to sosua at night.
why some people still insist that there is a agreat night life? Please mention just 1 club where normal dominicans or tourist not looking for hookers can go for a drink.
they open a nice club (Club X), that supposed to be different, but it didnt work. until prostitution is not erradicated or at least change to another street. you wont see dominicans going to sosua.
Now is getting worse with the uggly pros.

See Johnny post bad things about Sosua. Johnny hates Sosua!!

He is a world class landscape architect with too much time on his hands, perhaps we need to find Johnny a nice landscaping job in Playa Chiquita so he is stuck in Sosua for a few weeks!

;)
