Hey Everyone!
First off, this site is incredible! So helpful!
Long story short me and a buddy of mine are moving to the DR in November 2009. I have found plenty of apartments and villas online in Sosua and Cabarete but we were looking for something in Puerto Plata preferably as close to Ocean World or some of the other tourist areas and casinos as possible.
Basically I'm looking for a 2 bedroom and 1 or 2 bath apartment or villa or house or whatever but it would need to be fully furnished and include internet, cable, electricity, water, have some sort of backup power situation and all that and I would be willing to spend up to 700-800 USD a month but the cheaper the better. If anyone knows of ANYTHING at all that might be what I'm looking for please feel free to post here or PM me.

Thanks!

so Sosua or Cabarete are much more touristy areas? Kinda what we're looking for. Going for an extended vacation for the most part but we both play poker professionally both online and live so just from what i've found out on google there seems to be more casinos in Puerto Plata but i have no objection moving to Sosua at all as long as there is at least one good casino that offers some sort of poker room. The reason I mentioned Pt Plata and Ocean World is because I know Ocean World is one of the better if not the best poker room on the Island.
Can anyone offer any insight/advice?

If poker is your game, Sosua is probably not your destination. The casinos there are tiny (especially the one in-town). I've played some blackjack in the two Sosua casinos and although did see some poker action (1 table) going on late at night in the casino just to the west (i forget the name), forget about any such thing in Sosua's "downtown" casino (yes, I've forgotten their name too). I've visited the Ocean World casino, without having time to play there, but it seems much larger. I'll leave it to others to tell you what kind of action you can find there.

cool, thanks. i had a feeling i would have to stick to P. Plata but it seems like Sosua is the place to be otherwise and from what i can tell its cheaper too.
Thanks folks! Keep up the great advice!

I have some friends who play Poker quite seriously, they live in Sosua and Cabarete. You are correct, they have a big game twice a week at ocean world (you'll have to forgive my ignorance to it, I'm not a poker player, it is called Texas something or other) where they all meet and play. I think it is thursday and saturday although I don't hang out on that side of the Isle anymore so things may have changed.

If you are a pro player I don't know what kind of money you are talking but my Pal often would come home with 150,000 pesos from the evenings events, if that is some kind of guideline for you of the money that passes (I don't know if that is alot or not in poker but seems alot to me). From what I understand once the casino closes (or after 2am), they begin a cash game where it gets interesting.

If you are interested in hitching up with the Poker scene I can hook you up with my friend who plays on a regular basis and does all the Oceanworld games etc. I'll point you in the direction of his bar so you can suss it out.

Anyway, I really don't know enough about the scene to tell you any more.
Have fun.

Wow! Great! Thanks Pig! That's a lot of very helpful info. I mean, since it looks like other poker players have settled in or on Sosua and Cabarete then I'll definatley have to take a look at staying there. Don't be surprised if you get a PM from me in November when i'm out there looking for some insight into the local poker scene!
Thanks again!

Nice! That's what I'm hoping for!
So if anyone else out there has an apartment available in Sosua for the price above let me know on here or PM me and we'll be talking for sure!

sup bro? My buddy and I play for a living and are going to be in Cabarete until Nov 2 mostly partying but also scouting the games. I play exclusively online and am looking for a place to winter and maybe move permanently. PM if you'll be there at that time and want to meet. GL getting set up, I think you picked an excellent area, I think Coste Norte is going to next grinder haven ala Thailand and the Phillipines. Report back on your findings, I know there is supposed to be a 100-200NL (3-6ish) game in Cabarete but last trip I only checked out Playa Dorada as I wasn't with poker players and didn't see anything over 1-2NL but I'll know more after trip.

hey man, I'll be down in the DR starting on November 5th so meeting up wont be an option but i am going to be on the north coast for a while, about 10 months or so with the exception of a few weeks here and there to go back to Canada but PM me anytime you're down there after the 5th! I've heard about some good 100-200DP games but I dont know if they're still running. I will certainly let you know about anything i find for sure.
Talk to you later dude

gpeplinskie feel free to contact me via private message...

I'm also Canadian, play semi professionally (semi cuz I'm busy with other projects, and I have a family), play mainly online due to time restraints and convenience, I do however, know the complete live scene here, I've been here for 12 years, surely could answer any of your questions and would be my pleasure to help out a fellow Canadian...
Conchman is the man, I agree in regards to Cofresi as the best location for you...

And yet another former Canadian will reply; been playing FT live/online here for 5 years now. Games as a whole on the island are not wholly consistent for action. There is a core group of players in the sosua/cab area that play 100/200 (3/6) for 10-20k buy ins. Lotta these players will go for up to 2k USD on a bad night. Usually one table two nights a week wed/sat during low season. Some of these players will play as high as $10/$20USD game if the right group can be found. In sosua/cab area the buy-ins are min 10k for this game and the rake at one location is 5% max 500Rd a hand. Now Ocean world plays Tues/Sat. Their focus is more tournament oriented (start with tourney and then maybe a cash game afterwards, no guarantee). The min buy in though is much lower (3k pesos) and doesn't interest me as beating the rake is difficult (5% 600RD cap per hand). Also, as a note about casinos in POP, you have to be careful (like you do anywhere) of collusion. Been some bad press out of POP lately of incidents of collusion and intimidation. The casinos themselves are not directly involved, but as far as i am concerned they condone this behavior by allowing known colluders to play. Couple of other things, new casino opening at the end of October in Sosua which will heat up the poker action in the area by gathering alot of splinter players under one roof. Lastly, SD has some REALLY rich games from time to time. I have no idea what your comfort level is, but if you are doing ths FT I am sure you are beyond micro/low stakes. Again I do this professionally myself so if you want to PM me privately I will give you any further info you may require.
