I know someone coming to the DR for an extended period and they were interested to know if Ambien, a sleeping aid, Evista to prevent bone loss, and Eutriox to raise blood pressure were available in the DR.

Actually Eutirox, not eutriox

I know someone coming to the DR for an extended period and they were interested to know if Ambien, a sleeping aid, Evista to prevent bone loss, and Eutriox to raise blood pressure were available in the DR.

The meds needed are Ambien, Evista and Eutirox. The third one was misspelled in their email to me and they have since corrected it.

Eutirox (aka. Levotiroxin, Eutirox, Tyrax, Testam, Euthyrox, Dexnon, Levothroid...)

I only found an Internet mention of Eutirox here:
Secretar?a de Estado de Salud P?blica y Asistencia Social: Eutirox 100mcg
Secretar?a de Estado de Salud P?blica y Asistencia Social: Eutirox 25mcg

which would suggest it could at least have been available in the DR.

Eutirox/Levotiroxina is being marketed under a myriad of "names", inlcuding:

  • USA: Synthroid, Thyrax, Levoxyl
  • Espa?a: Dexnon, Levothroid, Thyrax y Tiroxina Leo
  • M?xico: Euthyrox, Thyrax
  • Venezuela: Eutirox, Tyrax, Testam
  • Argentina: Euthyrox
The Wikipedia article on Eutirox suggests that Levothyroxine, also <small>L</small>-thyroxine, synthetic T4, or 3,5,3',5'-tetraiodo-L-thyronine, is a synthetic form of thyroxine (thyroid hormone).

Interesting article here too:

  • USA: Synthroid, Thyrax, Levoxyl
  • Espa?a: Dexnon, Levothroid, Thyrax y Tiroxina Leo
  • M?xico: Euthyrox, Thyrax
  • Venezuela: Eutirox, Tyrax, Testam
  • Argentina: Euthyrox

  • Poco apetito
  • Dolores de cabeza
  • Sensaci?n de fr?o
  • Dolores musculares y espasmos (calambres)
  • Pulso lento
  • Cabello seco y quebradizo
  • U?as d?biles

Ambien: Trade names of Ambien (zolpidem) include Adormix, Ambien CR, Edluar, Damixan, Hypnogen, Ivedal, Lioran, Nytamel, Sanval, Stilnoct, Stilnox, Stilnox CR, Sucedal, Zoldem, Zolnod and Zolpihexal.

Thanks guys. I expected the Eutirox to be easy, Evistad to be a challenge and the Ambien to be difficult if not impossible. That appears to be the case.

If the DNCD has it on a list, does that mean it simply cannot be gotten here?

From what I understand and experienced, NO, imperatively.
Controlled medicines can only be prescribed by an MD with a special prescription license. They, as I understand, can only prescribe such medicines which are categorized for their specialty. Codeine products and derivatives, to mention and example, can be prescribed by some Pulmonologists (lung specialists) to treat certain types of coughs, etc.
These prescriptions are State issued papers, with serial numbers and in layered copies, for the MD, the pharmacist, the authorities, etc.
Equally, only certain pharmacies are entrusted with the disbursement of such medications. Usually the ones affiliated to large clinics.

Thanks JD. Sounds much like a prescription for most anything in the US not over the counter.

In this case, does anyone know where Ambien can be gotten on the North Coast by the legal method JD mentioned?

Most farmacias carry 10 mg Diazepam (Dicepin) AKA Valium, you will need script.

More effective than Ambien, especially after one glass of wine!

Zolpidem (Ambien) may be prescribed to treat other things than just insomnia as this article suggests:

Zolpidem is a prescription medication used for the short-term treatment of insomnia, as well as some brain disorders. It is a short-acting nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic.
...

Its hypnotic effects are similar to those of the benzodiazepine class of drugs, but it is molecularly distinct from the classical benzodiazepine molecule. ...

Certainly looks like the kind of stuff which should not be dispensed to the general population, although it may bring some dearly needed peace to the local traffic situation, on a second thought :cheeky:.

I have used melatonin to reduce jet lag

You don't need Ambien to sleep. Try using melantonin, 1 before bed.

When I had to fly often for work I used melatonin to reduce jet lag. Maybe it would help this woman. Is it readily available on the north coast?

I'm surprised that you're saying that a prescription is needed for these medications. Is this something new?

I've had no problem buying Valium and Xanax in Cabarete. I was never asked for a prescription. I bought all sorts of pain medication too for which I had a prescription but no one even asked to see it. I went to the pharmacy today and asked for Lexotanil (which is a benzodiazepine like Valium) and wasn't asked for a prescription. I didn't get it because I thought it was too expensive at RD$60 a pill.

One can be surprised about what they will sell without a proper prescription.
I can only tell you that once it IS listed (and only relatively few are), then it really seem impossible to get it without the government issued prescription.
Logic is not a trait of the local administration, so I would not be surprised that, while a certain compound is listed, certain derivatives would not.
