can someone describe a carro publico, please
Essentially, older, rather beat up 4 door vehicle, occasionaly a 4 door pickup, but never new models.
years ago, they were 4 door Austins, then some Chevrolets, but with the advent of the Japanese vehicles they are now nearly all Corollas and such...
Generally speaking the minivans in good condition are taxis and the ones in bad conditions are the ones running routes like cars or publicos in the city...
Useful in the absence of good bus service.

carro publico - usually a toyota, no less than 10 years old. half way rusted. gas bottle in the boot. seats 6-8 passengers plus driver.
guagua - small van, usually mitsubishi. half way rusted. door always open. seats up to 25 people plus driver plus dude who charges money for the ride - he usually hangs outside, sort of.

To all the above, I might add that a carro publico or carro de choncho, drives a route to which it's owner acquires a much defended "right", very much like a city bus. In some cities they have designated stops and places they stop traditionally and many stretches of main roads where they are not allowed to stop (no subir pasageros) but do stop nevertheless.
They can be waved down... preferably with your fingers indicating how large a party you are looking to upload, while many drivers, honking and whistling may by show of fingers also indicate how much "space" he has.
They are not considered a recomendable SAFE mean of transportation in the main cities after dusk. Most working Dominicans using conchos on a daily basis will be able to tell you their story of having been assaulted, in such a ride.
If you expect to enjoy the relative comfort of riding alone in the front passanger seat, just pay double the fare and the driver will cut one of his finges off

They are usually beat to within an inch of no longer functioning. And you won't be able to ride comfortably in one unless you are an elf, as the driver will pack three in the front seat, and at least four in the back.
But it is an extremely cheap way to get around the city.:glasses:
