Question to computer & internet gurus.

My old Codetel DSL modem died and I bought a used DSL modem from a friend, but can't make it establish internet connection. Power, ethernet and DSL lights are ON, but internet light is red - no connection. I tried to set it up to PPPoE mode but it asks for username and password. Codetel tech support is not helpful as they say there is no username and password for PPPoE settings. But the modem will not accept blank fields.

Somewhere earlier I think I saw that they are using verizon for PPPoE username. But what is the password? Any idea? Or may be I can't just use any DSL modem and must buy one from Codetel? :disappoin

I don't really know the answer, but how about trying your Username / Password from Codetel that you got when you signed up?

Codetel..........

.............DOES ***NOT*** USE A USERNAME OR PASSWORD FOR INTERNET ACCESS OR MODEM ACCESS...........

.....LEAVE THEM BLANK..............

..........BUT IF YOU MUST ............. TRY YOUR 10 DIGIT PHONE NUMBER IN BOTH FIELDS..............

Hope that helps.................

Modem

Codetel is very difficult to configure. I have one modem that I have never been able to work. Try this
First Codetel is Adsl
second:... I have never been able to get PPoE to work....

Try

no login:

Get IP address dyanamically from ISP

DNS Address

Use these DNS Servers: (depending on where you are)..
Do not use ger DNS automatically...

Codetel DNS servers... (as far as I know)

North & SD
196.3.81.5
196.3.81.132
East
200.88.127.22
200.88.127.23

Good Luck

Codetel does your "authentication" based on your "line" rather than on Modem. I have tried my home modem on my business lien and vice versa and they worked. I have also tried DSL modem on non-DSL line and obviously it didn't work.

we figured this out about 6 months ago and its covered here in a thread. its the serial number on the bottom of the modem, both as the user name and the password. i don't remember which number as there are several, but search in the archives and you will find it.

the above responses except rubio are incorrect btw.

Thanks to everyone. I will try everything you suggested above.

adrianb. You misunderstood. I do not need username and password to access modem settings. I need provider's DSL settings.

The settings are the following: VPI=0, VCI=33. If the modem forces you to put an username or password, just put anything you want in there, it will work anyway.

Codetel VPI/VCI settings are 0/33 and most router comes with 0/35 by default.

Maybe a thread could me made (a new one) like Internet Info , the thread would be sticky, and would contain links to other threads such as this one, so people would and could easily find the information they need

Wrong,
The info posted here is correct. You are incorrect. The info on a modem as to password and user name are the password for your MODEM not the ISP Codetel !!!

I will add to this. Open DNS servers work fine with Codetel -

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Actually, they work better, because often Codetel DNS servers can not resolve some web addresses and you have to click again and again and again in order for a web site to start loading.
