Thank you for the excellent report; you covered a lot of things and I appreciate your time. Any ETA on the Sunfish Sailboats or the Casino. We're going in late Feb and my husband dreams of sailing a few times. He will be very disappointed if they don't have the sailboats. Was there enough to do at resort? Did you take any excursions. Cost? Worth it? Thanks again.

Hi Trudy,

I too wanted to go and sail very much and nobody was able to tell me about the sailboat situation and if they were sending them soon or repairing them (not sure what was going on...). Construction seemed ongoing when we were there (don't worry though it is not noisy) so who knows when they will finish Dominicans work on a different schedule, timing and style than us in North America. It is too hot to be speedy and tomorrow is another day... So in short noone can tell you these two answers.

For excursions: my friends went on a safari and they said it was not worth it because their backs almost gave out. Apparently the roads are so bad and so bumpy that you get knocked about in the jeep like crazy. However they also went horse back riding on this safari so maybe that was part of the problem. They said the sugar cane plantation was nice though.

Another couple went swimming with dolphins and said it was great. Cost is $65.00US. This is in Manati Park and if you just want to go to the park it costs $21.00US It is 15 minutes away by bumpy bus from Catalonia (bus is free)

There are other excursions to do but I didn't hear about them.

Have a great vacation the DR is beautiful!

Hi Karen,

I was at the Catalonia Bavaro the first week of January 1999. I was never at the Allegro Resort, but I think I know it because we walked to Cabeza de Toro one day, is it the one beside the little market? If so you are in for a wonderful surprise if you are going to Catalonia Bavaro this time. The Catalonia is much nicer...much bigger and less crowded...

Anyways you should check out my review! It is in the DR1 resort database. I included many details about my stay there.

Have a great DR holiday!

Mina, after reading your wonderful review, I am very nervous about going to this resort. We are booked for Feb 24th, but we can change hotels with no penalty if we upgrade. Do you think we should? We are looking for peace and quiet. How did Natura Park look? That was one of our other choices. Maureen. PS you can email me at MMaylward@hotmail.com

Maureen, I have read Mina's review of the Catalonia. I haven't been there, but I can tell you that Natura Park has NO noise problem whatsoever. If you want a quiet - yet lively place, go to Natura Park instead.

Also, even though the beach at NP still bears the scars of hurricane George, I found the situation more and more serious as you go South, toward the Allegro (less sand, more trash)and the Catalonia.

A waiter like the one described by Mina (re: Japanese restaurant) would have been fired from NP in minutes - one of the reasons being that the Dominican authorities themselves instruct the population to be particularly nice to visitors. Anyone who has taken the Saona island ride must remember this sign right on the beach:

Don't throw garbage. Smile to tourists. Help develop your country. (in Spanish, needless to say...).
