A good surgeon (example: plastic surgeon) can make several thousand dollars / day in DR. Mind you, most are not even US trained. They got their training in brazil or mexico. American doctor would have to get a dominican medical license to practice here.

Unless your degree is from here getting a DR lic. to practice is almost impossible and envolves retaking boards and serving another intership for basically no pay.
A basic Doctor here (GP) is lucky to clear $2000 a month. Specialists slightly more. As an example our house keeper needed a surgery. In the US the doctors fee for her surgery would have been $1800 or so. Here the doctor made $400 and he had to pay for his assistant as well.

You have to look at this with a Gauss, my good doctor. You can be the cat's meow, but only have an income that your patients and insurance providers can afford to pay.

There are plenty of good docs here believe it or not. However, if you've graduated near the top of your class at Hopkins, I would imagine, with that, a license, linguistics and training in the appropriate cultural modality, you would probably do well given you can develop a serious CLIENT BASE.

Hopefully you're not asking because you had your license revoked in the US :)

PJT would like to follow Bob K's example to put some scale to the question. A doctor consult and treatment for a minor illness or injury in a private or non-profit clinic in the DR would cost in total about the same as an insurance deductable, of let's say USD $20, in the States. Therefore, a doctor practicing in the DR is not on the same earnings level as one trained and practicing in the U.S.

A U.S. trained doctor in the DR would have to have truly altruistic motives to practice as the huge earnings potential are very limited.

PJT

I know an oncologist and a cardiologist here that don't do too bad for the economy, neither take insurance.

Consult with the cardiologist is $2500rd. plus if he does anything else like an echo gram, stress test, all are added one don't take long to get to $200us. He is also the one that put my stents in at CEDIMAT. Now was a lot cheaper than the USA, but still for the economy here he is not cheap. stents and 6 days in the hospital was about $16000us, not sure what his cut was. But nice office off lincolin on roberto pastureza. He is also the head of cardiology at CEDIMAT.

A consult with the oncologist is according to him $4000rd, but on the other hand he travels all over the world to seminars as a speaker. Spanish, Dominican trained.

I still want to know if the OP lost his license to practice medicine in the States? Or is this another "bailout" because of out-of-this-universe malpractice insurance rates and Obama's bargain basement health insurance that most likely will mandate treatment and not pay the bill!

Doctors are people too!

If I remember right, the OP is a young kid thinking or actually studying in SanPedro at one of the pay for degree mills. He needs video games and other stuff from the states--again--if this is the same kid.

However, the answer is much as Dr. BobK has put it. A US trained doctor might consult here, might teach here, but he cannot legally practice here unless he goes through the many, many hoops required to become a member of the Dominican College of Doctors...

(Very different, and I am still amazed at the stupidity of the Supreme Court on this point, from the Dominican College of Lawyers....)

And more to the point-> the effort would be more costly than the benefits....unless you started very early in life....

I might go to medical school at UNIBE in Santo Domingo. I will have to be fluent in Spanish anyway to get licensed to practice medicine in the Dominican Republic and to graduate from UNIBE. Then I can practice plastic surgery in Santo Domingo. In order to practice law in the Dominican Republic, do you have to be a Dominican born in that country or with Dominican parents?

1) You do not have to be fluent in Spanish to study medicine at UNIBE, you just need the money and some effort..
2) You cannot do plastic surgery unless you have done a specialized residence program and no self-respecting Plastic Surgeon would do that here, more likely in Barzil or Venezuela, maybe Mexico...or, if they are a resident or citizen, in the United States.

Kid you need to sit down with a professional guidance councillor....

As far as location, it sounds like you want to live in the DR.

As far as vocation, I would guess that you have already checked out being a fireman or a cop - those would round out the top 5 choices of most.......5 year olds.

Take Hillbilly's advice.

I'm new so I thought I would come to this group of experts for guidance:

My girlfriend just dumped me. I was so distraught that my job performance really suffered and, as a result, I was fired.

Well, here I am collecting unemployment. I think I owe about 3300 in back child support and my rent is 3 months behind.

Here's my question: can I move to DR, get a job with my business degree even though I don't speak Spanish (because I'm smarter than those poor Dominicans) and open my own restaurant in Sosua? I figured that being such a smart American, I can just "escape" to the DR, pay women to love me and never have to pay taxes ever again.

JUEPA!!!!!!!!!!!!

The mods here stopped taking the OP seriously ages ago. This is really Clown Bin fodder, perfect for Funny Friday, but the only option I have is to kill it kindly.
