Now I know that you are not going to believe this one.

I would not, had I not just seen it with my own eyes.

I have been getting MAIL here in SD for the last year. I mean delivered to my door. OK; I only risk one magazine subscription but since there are no postal service places within easy walking distance of Gazcue, it cost me $6 buck in the taxi to pick up any sort of package and was just not worth it.

But a friend said she got cds from Amazon delivered. So I risked it. Over the year, I have had about 6 deliveries from Amazon, all small, with one or two CDs or books. I have never placed a big order for fear of losing it.

Today, I got a bigger box from Amazon, delivered to the door. It was in a big plastic bags which was sealed with one of those heavy plastic strips that you cannot cut. Now I think that Amazon will only ship books and CDs here since I have tried to ship other stuff and they will not do it to this address.

But I did want to report that the POSTAL SERVICE IS WORKING!!!!!!!

AMAZING!!!!!

ASTONISHING!!!

I remember when I lived up in LT and had a note that someone had sent me a package and I had to drive to Samana to pick it up. And then the lady at the PO in LT looked behind her at this canvas bag which was about 4 feet high and said

"If you are going over to Samana, would you mind taking the mail?"

I imagined that every postcard written by every tourist in the last five years was in that bag!

Coming from the States where tampering with the mail is a federal offense, I was bent over laughing at the proposition that they were going to hand over the mail sack to an extranjera....

But here I am, in the Capital, only four years later,

And the postman rings once!!

I didn't realize they had a working postal service in the DR. I've seen the blue postal boxes (just like the ones in the U.S.) here in Pueblo Bavaro but I thought they were just for show.

It's true about the mail

I was amazed also to find a box I sent from Ozone Park NY regular mail ( cost 30 bucks though) weighing 6 pounds, actually got to La Caleta near Las Americas airport within 7 days- deliverd to door of my friend who lives in the sticks.... I don't know how it ws done- I have never seen a mailman there like we know them in the USA... but someone dropped off the box at his place... I was amazed.. Mike

Not such good luck...

I've had several letters, cards and packages sent from the U.S. to the D.R. through regular mail that never made it to my hands. This is disappointing because none had anything of value, except for one that had $20. I'm sure someone that works for the postal service enjoyed my Easter candy from 2007 as well as that $20, among other things.

I would like to know...is there any place to go to look for these perhaps "lost" or "misplaced" items, or to report that they were maybe stolen? Or should I just let it go, like I do with all the petty stuff that was taken from the side pockets of my luggage at SDQ?

On the other hand, I've SENT a few letters and cards from the post office in Barahona to the U.S. that have all gotten there, in about 2 weeks, which is an amazing feat. The post office here is in this huge building that looks straight out of Trujillo times, with the same desks and equipment and all. The place echoes as you walk through it, and there are maybe 1 or 2 people in the whole building. Once I had to wait 45 minutes for them to find A STAMP. A STAMP, I AM NOT KIDDING! It was funny, they looked at me like 'what? you want to MAIL something?!' I didn't get mad, I had to just laugh about that one. They searched through all the drawers that were crammed with junk in their desks, till they found a couple random ones that were wrinkled up. Whenever I mail something from there, it's so weird because I pay for the stamps and they just stand there like 'ok...', without putting the stamps on or anything, and then they stuff whatever I'm sending into one of their junk drawers.

Seems that a lot of people would rather pay the money to use the envio services of Caribe Tours and the likes because it's safer.

The only time I ever saw our postman was when we lived in Arroyo Hondo, and that was only once a year in the run-up to Christmas when he materialised in search of his Christmas bonus. No idea what he did for the rest of the year.

Taken in 2007, middle of the day, the postmaster was out.
