Hi guys;

Well this is a technical comment/question for all the internet gurus / codetel users of the forum.
Today I realized that most of the codetel's hostnames (a hostname is given to your router every time you connect your Flash router to internet, just like the IP address - the hostname is more usually used by your ISP to identify your device on the internet network) are within this format :
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.sta.codetel.net.do where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is always an IP address. (you can use any tracert online tool to check your IP address for verify that and get your hostname) So far so good. Well now the little problem i see is that IP address is ALWAYS an IP that belongs to US military networks, US government agencies, and I've also seen an IP from a UK defense organization.
So if you're really paranoiac, you could say that all the traffic going through Codetel goes first to the FBI or the US military. Now if you take it more easy, you can think that Codetel network engineer are having fun with their DNS settings, trying to put *scary* IP address in each hostname to cool down spam / hackers intentions ?
So, what do you think ? Shall we all be paranoiac or just take it easy ? ;)

The FBI does not have international jurisdiction. They would need the cooperation and sign-off here in DR.

This is so deep end of the pool...

Guys don't get me wrong, I'm not a big fan of the conspiracy theory, I think it's just weird to see those IP addresses from Codetel. I just wanted to share this and see what other techies think of that.

What's so "wierd" about them?

The internet was developed by the government. Is it unreasonable to think that they want to keep a handle on it? All those numbers don't amount to a hill of beans until you do something illegal and aren't smart enough to by-pass the identification process.

At that point, and depending upon who you f**ked over, any alphabet agency has the ability to get your exact location. In most instances, I don't see anything wrong with that. It's all part of a much larger cat-and-mouse game.

P.S. Cobra, you never looked better:)

This is a joke, or what?

What are you talking here about.
Example: 215samana90.codetel.net.do = 200.88.90.215

200.88.64.0 - 200.88.127.255

Where does it say something about US military networks or government agencies.

Goodvin, this is not a joke.
The IP address you provided resolves to 215samana90.codetel.net.do, no doubt about that.
If you run a lookup on another IP address from the IP ranges for DR provided by Steves, like this one for example, you can see that the hostname contains an IP address instead of 215samana90 :
IP address: 190.166.23.55
Host name: 55.23.166.190.f.sta.codetel.net.do
I let you discover to who belongs that address. My guess is that is just a trick made by codetel network engineers because they have full control over the naming convention of their subnetwork and maybe they thought it was fun to do to try to scare hackers from their network at first sight. ;) Any other ideas ?

You are just looking where it ain't. A hostname is a hostname, not a portion of it. You just chose to look the first part of the hostname you provide which is: 55.23.166.190.f.sta.codetel.net.do .

That hostname (not IP) is useless if it isn't in it's complete form. The first part of the hostname which are numbers resembling an IP address have nothing to do with any Codetel connection. Either you look for the full hostname, or don't look at all. It is like searching for a random name like John without looking it's last name, is useless.

The fact that the first part of the hostname of a Codetel IP address resembles an IP which is owned by the US Military is pure coincidence.

Although I like the way you investigate things. It is a nice catch even if it is just a coincidence. Forgive me the tone of the post, I've been drinking JW Black for a while:D

Exactly, this is pure coincindence. I've just realized that 55.23.166.190 is 190.166.23.55 with inverted numbers, which is the IP address looked up ! I should have played lottery today ! And I realize I owe you all a beer (or JW black for you ExtremeR) ! Sorry for the mess...

But hold it up to a mirror and what do you see?

Coincidence? I don't think so!

And hold "Funny Friday" up to a mirror and what do you see???

That's right. Think about it.

It just gets curiouser and curiouser.
