Internet/power in North Coast area

So I play poker on the internet for a living, and I'm considering going to the North Coast of the DR for a few months and possibly longer. Working near a beach seems a lot more fun for me than working in Michigan!

But I need to know a little bit more about the internet and power situation in the area. It's important that I have fairly reliable internet and power available. I understand that there are a lot of apartment buildings with backup generators and high speed internet. When an apartment is advertised as having "high speed internet," is that generally through a wireless router or would a hard-wired connection be available? And I also understand that blackouts are quite common, which is why many apartment buildings have a generator. What sort of delay could I expect between the time the backout starts and the generator kicks in? If it's not too long, it won't be too much of a problem, since I can just have my computer hooked up to an independent uninteruptible power supply. Lastly, does anyone have any insight on how reliable the DSL internet is in the area? Do you often have problems connecting to the internet?

Thanks in advance for anyone who can give me any information on these issues. I'm thinking specifically about the Cabarete area.

You may not like this answer, but "it really all depends on where you choose to stay". Try to make sure you have DSL through Codetel & not internet thru the cable company. Codetel is infinitely more reliable. (If you're renting an apartment, two owners side by side could have different setups)

Where I am in Cabarete, the lights 'may' flicker for a moment twice a month. The only outtage I remember in recent history was a pre-announced outtage for 4 hours last month for annual maintenance. My internet has a ups on the router & modem - so I'd say I have connectivity 99.9% of the time. An internet outtage for me is more likely to be related to the carrier than to electricity.

Now, just across the street could be different. Different power circuit & perhaps no UPS on their modem/router. In that case, if the street lights go off, internet could go down... maybe 5 seconds to a minute for generator to kick in, then time for the modem to boot, then time for you to reconnect. Maybe 1 1/2 to 4 minutes depending how fast all that happens.

If you don't mind advising budget & type of accommodation you're seeking... the members here may be able to guide you to places with good/bad connectivity. Some offer wifi only, some wired only, some both.

Also, many of the bars/restaurants in town have wifi, so you may be able to sit 'on the beach' and play online.

Thanks for the reply. I'd looking for a 1 bedroom apartment with a DSL internet connection and air conditioning. A medium to large size desk and a decent office chair would be a real plus. I would definitely want my internet connection set up like yours. As far as my budget goes, I could spend up to 1000 dollars a month or so on rent, but would prefer to spend less. I'm not sure what sort of monthly rents would get what sort of place, so I don't really have a specific price range in mind.

Oh, and if I rent an apartment, is it like in the States where I can call up the internet provider and have them install a DSL line in my apartment? That would probably be my preference (or get an apartment that already has DSL line of its own installed). Or does the building's owner get the internet connection for the entire building collectively?

Well first you need a condo with 24/7 elect. Many say the have it but only a few are really reliable. You may want to try Ocean Dream. We have had very few problems. Your internet will probable be wifi. Some condo's have Dsl but it seems most that I talk to use cable. I believe to have Dsl with Codetel you have to have a land line and they are not allway available. Hope this helps. PM me if I can help.

If you want your own internet contract that can take as long as 3 months to install.

We had problems with our internet for a period of over 6 months from March this year - no number of visits to the Codetel offices sorted it, but eventually it magically worked itself out. We have had a contract for over two years so it wasn't as if it was a new connection.

I heard recently that Codetel has been taken over this year by a company from Mexico which is renowned for asset-stripping so this figures lol.

My advice ........ don't!

Ditto on Ocean Dream working for you... $700-$800/month would get you a studio (like a hotel room with kitchen - about 50 sq meters). $1100-$1500 may get you a 2 bedroom (100 sq meters). Internet type will vary from unit to unit - you'd have to ask.

Ocean One may offer a one bedroom in your price range. Again, ask what the current internet setup is. Getting DSL installed yourself can be something that goes fast or takes months - you just never know.

These are both new, nice, secure places close to center of town.

There will be a lot of other options in your price range. Hopefully others give you some feedback on power & internet reliability.

I can also recommend Cita del Sol - older units, not in the class of those above... closer to the $550-$700 range for 1 bedrooms. When I stayed there, internet was a little spotty due to bad wiring or bad router - but that's been a couple of years now & they may have fixed it.

Thanks for all the help. Does anyone have any experience with broadband mobile internet in the Dominican Republic? That might be a worthwhile backup for me to get. I looked at Claro's DR website and it looked like there was an unlimited plan for like RD$1500/month. Would it be a hassle for me as a foreigner to buy this plan? I'm assuming this would be some sort of contract; does anyone have any idea if I could buy some sort of prepaid mobile broadband subscription? Although if I was going to stay for any significant period, I would probably rather get the Claro plan, if possible. And finally, does anyone have any idea about what sort of reception you would get with Claro mobile broadband in Cabarete in particular and the North Coast in general?

Thanks again for any replies.

Cita del Sol recently doubled its internet bandwidth

Cita del Sol recently installed a second T-1 line from Codetel and it has wireless throughout the project. Internet speed is generally good, but some days Codetel has problems and it slows down. There is a strong generator for backup power although power from the street has been reasonably reliable of late. One bedroom 52 square meter apartments can be rented for your price range, or less if you can do without air conditioning (I know you said you wanted A/C).

Ocean One and Ocean Dream also has very nice new apartments for rent though you would have to find one with the internet . Both projects are just slightly outside the center of town whereas Cita del Sol is in the center.

Another center of Cabarete project to consider is Wind Chimes which has some small apartments that would fit your requirements and budget.

When the internet is too slow you can always to to one of the casinos!
