I was wondering if it was possible to buy caoba or mahogany planks (not finished furniture) anywhere on the north coast from Sabaneta to Puerto Plata. If not, I have heard that there is a good place for woods other than pine on the road into Santiago from Navarette. Does anyone have any info?

OCHOA is a major mahogany importer. I am sure that nobody on the North Shore can match their prices.
Also MADESOL on the road between Santiago and Moca (right near the newest OCHOA store), maybe 8 minutes from Plaza Internacional...

Caoba is such a nice wood, a national treasure, but I see it being farmed illegally here often, and also destroying forests worldwide. There are alternatives that are much more common and abundant. Just something to consider.
We used hard oak, and are perfectly happy with it throughout the house. A personal choice obviously.

In know it is a bit of a distance but Indomaca on Duarte 8.5KM Santo Domingo has one of the best stocks of machined and rough hard woods, soft wood (treated and not) and board materials I have seen world wide. The service is excellent and the prices very good.

I had terrible trouble to find treated lumber for my house roof until I came across this supplier. I think Santa Clause has brought me a bench planer so maybe when I get back to the DR I will be visiting again !!

Hope this helps.

I talked to some people from Madeco and they told me the price for a board-foot of mahogany was $138 RDpesos. That is 1"x 1"x 12" ...So now you know.

price per board foot

Thanks so much for finding the price per board foot. So if a 1" x 1" costs 138 pesos per foot, a 1" x 4" should be approximately four times that cost per board foot. I didn't know it was that expensive - it's good to know.

I believe a board foot is 12 inches by 12 inches by 1 inch thick or any other measurement with a volume of 144 cubic inches.

Board foot measure

It works like this 1x4x1(this is always in feet) = 4.
Then because the length is always in feet divide by 12. = 0.33333333333
or else do it like this 1x4x0.33333333(4/12) = 0.3333333
so a 1x4x1 foot long board at 138 pesos a bfm would cost you 46 pesos.
a 10 foot long board would cost 1x4x10 = 40/12 = 3.333333 x 138 = 460 pesos.
No allowance is made for the fact that in North America a 1x4x10 is actually 3/4 x 31/2 x 10 feet long. It's still 3.333333 bfm.
:cheeky: I'm a woodworker to trade and taught this and similar stuff at the college for 30 years.:cheeky:

Correction

Sorry, I had a typo in that last post.
1x4x0.33333333(4/12) = 0.3333333
Should be1x0.3333333(4/12)x1 =0.33333
Same result.
Hey I'm only human.
