So I am going to SPDM for a week on January 8th and we are thinking of renting a car this time and I will be driving it..... ay, ay, ay!

Normally we get one and a family friend drives us everywhere but he is busy working this time and I hate taking taxi's everywhere.

I am not "really" scared - I can sure use my horn - but does anyone have any advice for me??

Yeah, what Chip said. And one more thing, look at the other cars around you and think what would be impossible for them to do and watch them do it.

I would never recommend driving through the country, for example if not via the Carretera de Samana, Duarte, etc.

Unless you have done it, speak fluent Spanish, are familiar with the roads, or have solid "local" escorts.

A rental car is a nice big tourist advertisement. Most locals, including myself, when travelling with my wife or friends, travel well-armed. I have nothing to hide here in this post. Safety FIRST.

Here, one need apply the 80/20 rule.

I will only be driving from SPDM to Juan Dolio and back and will be with my husband who is from there. I told him I want a beat up vehicle so that we don't attract attention.
He has his license but he can't drive very well as he hasn't had much practice so I would prefer to drive. It can't be much more dangerous than taking the local buses can it? LOL

Ha. I was hijacked in a taxi back in 2004, when we stopped to change a flat on the side of the road. Now I drive a Desert Eagle, so nobody sticks their machete in my business if you know what I mean.

Busses, like Fenatrano are not as bad a folks think. But then again, I grew up on the 4/5 and 6 in the Bx.

Remind me to stay off the road from SPM to Juan Dolio that week!!! The road is easy enough but use both mirrors as the motoconchos go both sides. Especially in San Pedro.

Rent the car and hire another local to drive. Between you and your hubby I am sure you know someone in SPDM or JD who will drive for you .

Make sure you look around you if you make any stops.maybe you'd like to keep a knife,bat,or anything that hits hard in your rented car.DO NO DRIVE TOO LATE AT NIGHT.drive slow because they tend to drive crazy in DR.Make sure you have plenty of gasoline for long trips around the country.last thing is HAVE FUN AND ENJOY DR,i envy you.

I did it!! It wasn't as bad as I built it up to be in my mind. In fact next time we go I am definitely driving everywhere. It was a lot of fun! And we didn't have to rely on taxis! Awesome!

Bring a razor (In your checked luggage of course) to peel of any sticker that indicates its a rental. Wait until you are out of sight of the rental office, of course.
